Quick answer
- The Hi Shin Unit is Shin’s army in Kingdom. Ou Ki named it at the Battle of Bayou, when it was a 100-man unit (Ch. 121), and it has grown to 60,000 soldiers (Ch. 801).
- Its officers are either Bayou-era originals (En, Suu Gen, Den Yuu, Hai Rou, Bi Hei and others) or transfers from broken units (So Sui from the Kaku Bi Unit, Gaku Rai and Ga Ro from Duke Hyou’s army, Na Ki from Kan Ki’s army).
- Five named officers have died: Bi Tou (Ch. 148), Shou Sa (Ch. 595), Kyo Gai (Ch. 619), Gaku Rai (Ch. 719) and Na Ki (Ch. 752), who had left the unit to join Kan Ki’s last stand.
- Kyou Kai is now a general with her own Kyou Kai Army of 20,000, which counts as part of the Hi Shin Unit’s 60,000.
The Hi Shin Unit (飛信隊) is Shin’s army in Kingdom. It started as a 100-man unit at the Battle of Bayou, where Ou Ki named it (Ch. 121). Today it has 60,000 soldiers: 40,000 under Shin and 20,000 in Kyou Kai’s army (Ch. 801). Five named officers have died so far: Bi Tou, Shou Sa, Kyo Gai, Gaku Rai and Na Ki.
This guide lists every major member with their role, when they joined, and whether they are alive. Names follow the Kingdom Fandom wiki’s romanization (the unit is also written “Fei Xin” and Shin is “Li Xin” in the Chinese reading). Spoilers: the article covers the manga up to the Great Qin–Zhao War arc (Ch. 845 onward), as of September 2026.

Hi Shin Unit original members
When Shin became a 100-Man Commander after the Battle at Dakan Plains, his first unit was made up of Dakan survivors and draftees from his home village. Ou Ki named it the “Hi Shin Unit” before sending it after Fuu Ki (Ch. 121).
The originals who are still in the unit today:
- En: the calm vice-captain. He planned the Fuu Ki attack with Shin (Ch. 121).
- Kyou Kai: Shin’s squadmate from Dakan Plains. She left after the Sanyou Campaign to avenge her sister and came back in the Kyou Kai’s Revenge arc (Ch. 357–365).
- Suu Gen, Hai Rou, Den Yuu, Den Ei, Ryuu Sen, Ryuu Yuu, Seki: now the unit’s senior infantry and cavalry officers.
- Bi Hei, Chu Tetsu, Taku Kei: Dakan Plains veterans who still lead small units.
Three common mix-ups:
- Ka Ryo Ten is not an original member. She joined as strategist only after the Sanyou Campaign (Ch. 246).
- Shin became a 100-Man Commander before the unit had a name. The promotion came after Dakan Plains; the name came at Bayou.
- The unit was named as a 100-man unit, not a 300-man one. It was 300 strong by the time it met Ou Hon’s Gyoku Hou Unit (Ch. 181).
Members who transferred from other units
Most of the unit’s senior outsiders came from forces whose commander had just been killed.
| Member | Came from | How they joined |
|---|---|---|
| So Sui | Kaku Bi Unit (lieutenant) | Kaku Bi was killed by Rin Ko (Ch. 195). His men were folded into the new 1,000-man Hi Shin Unit (Ch. 201) |
| Gaku Rai & Ga Ro | Duke Hyou Army | After Duke Hyou died during the Coalition invasion, they joined with 500 of his soldiers (Ch. 356) |
| Na Ki | Kan Ki Army | Attached to the unit at Kokuyou, then asked to transfer permanently. Rai Do tried to kill him for it (Ch. 484) |
| Man Dou | Duke Hyou Army (retired) | Came back to fight after Gaku Rai’s death, keeping a promise to his old friend |
| Kyou Rei | Shiyuu (Kyou Kai’s clan) | Joined on a trial basis during the Zhao campaigns and fights with the Kyou Kai Army |
Kingdom Hi Shin Unit deaths: who has died?
These are the named officers whose deaths are confirmed on panel.
| Member | Rank at death | Battle | How they died | Chapter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bi Tou | Squad leader | Battle of Bayou | Carried the wounded Shin away from Man Goku’s army with arrows in his stomach, then died of blood loss. Bi Hei’s younger brother | Ch. 148 |
| Shou Sa | 100-Man Commander, deputy infantry commander | Battle at Shukai Plains (Gyou Campaign), day 14 | Went back to save Kan To and the rookies from the Chou Ga Ryuu Army. He died of his wounds in Shin’s arms, and Kan To inherited his spear | Ch. 595 |
| Kyo Gai | 100-Man Commander (cavalry) | Battle at Shukai Plains, near Ri Boku’s HQ | Cut down by Hou Ken during the charge on Ri Boku’s headquarters | Ch. 619 |
| Gaku Rai | 1,000-Man Commander, Black Hi Hyou Unit | Battle of Gian | Killed in one stroke by Zhao general Jyou Ka Ryuu at the head of the drill formation | Ch. 719 |
| Na Ki | 1,000-Man Commander, Na Ki Clan | Battle of Hika | Left Shin’s side to reach Kan Ki’s last stand, killed Un Gen, and fell to a Zhao spear near Ri Boku’s position | Ch. 752 |
Two details that summaries often get wrong:
- Gaku Rai was killed by Jyou Ka Ryuu, one of Ri Boku’s Seika generals. Neither Ri Boku nor Hou Ken killed him.
- Na Ki did not die fighting as a Hi Shin officer. He thanked Shin, left the unit with his clan and rode to Kan Ki. He died on that battlefield.
The unit has also lost many named rank-and-file members. At Bayou alone, Hou Ken and the Man Goku Army killed Kyou Ji, San Ka, Batsu Ken and others. For how these battles fit together, see our list of Kingdom battles.
How big is the Hi Shin Unit? Growth from 100 to 60,000
The chapter shows where each size first appears.
| Size | What happened | Shin’s rank | Chapter |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | Formed for the Battle of Bayou and named by Ou Ki | 100-Man Commander | Ch. 113, named Ch. 121 |
| 300 | Enlarged after Bayou; fighting on the Qin–Wei border | 300-Man Commander | By Ch. 181 |
| 1,000 | Temporary promotion in the Sanyou Campaign, made official after it; Kaku Bi’s men join | 1,000-Man Commander | Ch. 201 |
| ~2,000 | Duke Hyou hands Shin two 500-man units at Kankoku Pass (unofficial) | — | Coalition invasion |
| 3,000 | After the defense of Sai | 3,000-Man Commander | Ch. 356 |
| 5,000 | 4,000 under Shin + Kyou Kai’s 1,000 | 4,000-Man Commander | Ch. 373 |
| 8,000 | After the Choyou campaign: 5,000 + Kyou Kai’s 3,000 | 5,000-Man Commander | Ch. 407 |
| 15,000 | Shin becomes a general after the Gyou Campaign and receives the family name “Ri” (Ch. 641) | General | Ch. 643 |
| 30,000 | “Hi Shin Unit, Reborn”: siege of Roumou in the Hango campaign | General | Ch. 769 |
| 60,000 | Shou Hei Kun’s military reform: 40,000 + Kyou Kai Army 20,000 | General | Ch. 801 |
If a page just says “the Hi Shin Unit has 8,000” or “15,000” soldiers, it is quoting an old point in the story. Shin kept the word “unit” instead of “army” after becoming a general because Ou Ki gave the unit its name.
Where is the Hi Shin Unit now?
The current arc is the Great Qin–Zhao War (from Ch. 845, 229 BC). The Hi Shin Unit broke through Ri Boku’s lines at Mouen Plains and reached the Zhao capital, Kantan (Handan), where it started a siege (Ch. 876). It was a trap. Ri Boku had let the unit through, and his hidden armies pinned it against the city walls (Ch. 877–878). The veterans compare it to Bayou 15 years earlier.
The chapters after this are still unfolding week to week, so this guide stops at Chapter 878 and will be updated once the Kantan battle settles.
The story is still running, so this section only reflects what has happened so far.
Who is not a Hi Shin Unit member?
- Roku O Mi was one of Ou Ki’s commanders and now leads the former Tou Army. He was never in the Hi Shin Unit.
- Kai Oku is Shou Hei Kun’s aide and an instructor at the strategist academy, not a Hi Shin officer.
- Kaine is Ri Boku’s Zhao commander and one of the unit’s regular enemies.
- Mou Ten and Ou Hon are Shin’s rivals and allies. They lead the Gaku Ka and Gyoku Hou armies.
Why is it called the “Hi Shin” Unit?
Ou Ki named the unit on the first day at Bayou (Ch. 121). The manga itself doesn’t explain the “Hi” (飛, “flying”). According to the Fandom wiki, author Yasuhisa Hara said it comes from the historical general Li Guang’s nickname, the “Flying General.” That is an outside comment from the author, not something stated in the story.
