After the Levely Warlord system abolished; Marines attack him on Kuraigana Island Ch. 956, Episode 957
Now Co-founder and executive of Cross Guild Ch. 1056, Ch. 1058

He was already famous before the Great Age of Pirates. At 19 he was in the crowd at Gol D. Roger’s execution.

As a Warlord he barely cooperated. Doflamingo notes he was the one they least expected to show up at the meeting to replace Crocodile (Ch. 234). He came anyway, out of curiosity about the Straw Hats.

Every Mihawk fight in the manga

Mihawk rarely fights. This table lists every clash shown in the manga, in order.

Opponent Where Manga Anime Outcome
Krieg Pirates Grand Line, then the Baratie Ch. 48–49 Episode 23 Destroys Krieg’s fleet of 50 ships, then cuts his flagship apart at the Baratie
Roronoa Zoro Baratie Ch. 50–52 Episode 24 Beats Zoro with the Kogatana, then finishes with Yoru. Spares his life
Whitebeard Marineford Ch. 553 Episode 463 Sends a giant flying slash at Whitebeard. Jozu blocks it
Monkey D. Luffy Marineford Ch. 560–561 Episodes 469–470 Has the upper hand, but Luffy escapes
Two Impel Down escapees Marineford Ch. 561 Episode 470 Takes both out with one blow
Buggy Marineford Ch. 561 Episode 470 Luffy uses Buggy as a shield. Mihawk cuts him up and knocks back his Muggy Ball
Vista Marineford Ch. 561–562 Episodes 470–471 Even exchange. They stop when the Pacifista arrive
Daz Bonez (Mr. 1) Marineford Ch. 570 Episode 479 Cuts through his steel body easily
Crocodile Marineford Ch. 570 Episode 479 Brief clash, no result
Marine fleet Kuraigana Island Ch. 956 Episode 957 Faces the Marines after losing Warlord status
Marine fleet (with Crocodile) Karai Bari Island Ch. 1058 Episode 1086 They sink the ships sent after Buggy

Two things stand out. He has never been shown losing a fight. And he left Marineford the moment Shanks arrived, saying he had agreed to fight Whitebeard, not Shanks (Ch. 580, Episode 489).

The anime adds a short clash with Jinbe at Marineford. That fight is anime-only.

Mihawk vs. Zoro at the Baratie

This is Mihawk’s most famous scene. He followed the Krieg Pirates to the East Blue just to kill time (Ch. 50).

Zoro challenged him. Mihawk took him on with only the small dagger from his pendant and blocked all three of Zoro’s swords. His first counter stabbed Zoro in the chest, but Zoro refused to back down (Ch. 51).

Impressed, Mihawk drew Yoru for the final exchange. His slash broke two of Zoro’s swords. Zoro turned to face him, saying a wound on the back is a swordsman’s shame, and Mihawk cut him across the chest while holding back enough to keep him alive.

Mihawk then gave his name and told Zoro he would wait for him “at the top” (Ch. 52, Episode 24).

How Mihawk trained Zoro

After Marineford, Bartholomew Kuma sent Zoro to Kuraigana Island, Mihawk’s home. Perona landed there too (Ch. 592).

Zoro beat the island’s Humandrills, then bowed to Mihawk and asked to be trained. Mihawk laughed that Zoro wanted his help to one day take his head, and agreed (Ch. 597, Episode 515). The training lasted the full two-year timeskip (Ch. 598).

What Mihawk taught Detail Chapter
Armament Haki on swords Coat the blade to protect it. Zoro was banned from drinking until he mastered it Ch. 779, Episode 720
Supreme King Haki All users share a strong sense of self that the weak cannot stand against Ch. 1194 (flashback)

That second lesson paid off at Elbaph. Zoro recalls it in his fight with Shepherd Sommers (Ch. 1194), and lands a Supreme King Haki attack on him in Chapter 1195.

Mihawk vs. Shanks: the rivalry

Mihawk and Shanks were rivals. Whitebeard tells Shanks he still remembers their fights (Ch. 434). According to Mihawk, he lost interest in fighting Shanks after Shanks lost his left arm saving Luffy (Ch. 96).

They stayed on good terms. When Luffy got his first bounty, Mihawk brought the poster to Shanks, and Shanks pulled him into a party (Ch. 96, Episode 45).

Dracule Mihawk Shanks
Title Strongest Swordsman in the World One of the Four Emperors
Bounty 3,590,000,000 4,048,900,000
Shown duels with each other None in the manga None in the manga
Supreme King Haki Not shown using it Yes

Who is stronger? Canon does not say. No duel between them appears in the manga, and no winner has ever been named. Mihawk holds the swordsman title, while Shanks has the higher bounty and the Emperor seat. Any ranking between them is fan opinion.

Is Mihawk the strongest swordsman?

Yes, in the story’s own terms. He is introduced as the strongest swordsman in the world (Ch. 50), and his databook entry says he rose by beating stronger and stronger opponents until no one was left to challenge him.

Some of his on-page feats:

  • He cut a giant ship and, at Marineford, a huge chunk of frozen tsunami, from long range (Ch. 49, Ch. 561).
  • He tracked Luffy’s Gear 2 speed and hit him from afar (Ch. 561).
  • He cut Daz Bonez’s steel body with ease (Ch. 570).
  • He came out of the Summit War without a scratch.

Zoro’s goal is still to take this title from him. As of Chapter 1195, that fight has not happened.

Mihawk and Cross Guild

When the Warlord system ended, Marines kept attacking Mihawk’s island. Crocodile contacted him and proposed an organization the Marines would have to fear. Mihawk accepted (Ch. 1058).

The group, Cross Guild, puts bounties on Marines. But Buggy’s men printed the posters with Buggy in front, so the world took Buggy for the boss. The Marines then named Buggy an Emperor (Ch. 1058).

Mihawk and Crocodile almost killed him for it. In the end, Mihawk said a figurehead taking all the attention might not be bad, since he would rather live in peace than be called an Emperor (Ch. 1058, Episode 1086). Later, when Buggy talked of going after the One Piece, Mihawk asked if Buggy expected them to fight the other Emperors for it (Ch. 1082, Episode 1116).

Vegapunk also cloned Mihawk’s lineage factor into a Seraphim called S-Hawk, as with the other former Warlords (Ch. 1059).

What is still unrevealed about Mihawk

Why did he become the “Marine Hunter”? Only that he once suffered a great betrayal and holds a grudge against the Marines (SBS Vol. 108)
Where was he born? Unknown. The databook leaves it blank
What was his Warlord-era bounty? Unknown. He is the only Warlord whose original bounty was never revealed
Is he connected to vampires or Imu? Fan theory based on the name “Dracule” and his eye design. Nothing in canon confirms it
