Quick answer
- Whitebeard had 16 division commanders: Marco, Ace, Jozu, Thatch, Vista, Blamenco, Rakuyo, Namule, Blenheim, Curiel, Kingdew, Haruta, Atmos, Speed Jil, Fossa and Izo. Several of the names were first revealed in SBS Volume 58, not in the story.
- Three are dead: Thatch (killed by Teach before the war), Ace (Marineford, Ch. 573–574) and Izo (Onigashima, Ch. 1041). Ace was the only commander killed at Marineford.
- After losing the Payback War to Blackbeard (Ch. 820), the commanders vanished. As of Chapter 1196, only Marco’s present is known: he is a doctor on Sphinx and has retired from piracy (Ch. 1059).
- Oda says all commanders are equal in rank (SBS Vol. 59), so Marco is not officially second-in-command.

The Whitebeard Pirates had 16 division commanders, one for each division under Edward “Whitebeard” Newgate: Marco, Ace, Jozu, Thatch, Vista, Blamenco, Rakuyo, Namule, Blenheim, Curiel, Kingdew, Haruta, Atmos, Speed Jil, Fossa and Izo. Three of them are dead (Thatch, Ace and Izo), Marco has retired to Whitebeard’s home island, and the other twelve have not been seen since the crew lost to Blackbeard.
This list covers every commander’s division, Devil Fruit or fighting style, and what happened to them after Marineford. It contains spoilers up to Chapter 1196, the latest officially released chapter at the time of writing (October 2026). Chapter numbers refer to the manga.
All 16 Whitebeard Pirates division commanders
Only some commanders are named in the story itself. Oda gave the rest of the names, with their division numbers, in the SBS of Volume 58, so the “Named in” column shows where each name first comes from.
| Div. | Commander | Devil Fruit / fighting style | Status (as of Ch. 1196) | Named in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Marco “the Phoenix” | Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix (Mythical Zoan) | Alive; doctor on Sphinx, retired from piracy (Ch. 1059) | Story (Ch. 434) |
| 2nd | Portgas D. Ace “Fire Fist” | Mera Mera no Mi (Logia) | Died at Marineford (Ch. 573–574) | Story |
| 3rd | Jozu “Diamond” | Kira Kira no Mi: turns his body into diamond (fruit name from Vivre Card) | Survived Marineford, lost his right arm; unseen since | Story (Ch. 434) |
| 4th | Thatch | No fruit; head chef of the crew (novel) | Killed by Teach before Marineford (Ch. 440, 552) | Story (Ch. 440) |
| 5th | Vista “of the Flower Swords” | Dual-wielding swordsman | Survived; unseen since | Story |
| 6th | Blamenco | Poke Poke no Mi: pockets on his body; pulls out a giant mallet (fruit name from SBS Vol. 98) | Survived; unseen since | SBS Vol. 58 |
| 7th | Rakuyo | Spiked flail with a dog-like face | Survived; unseen since | SBS Vol. 58 |
| 8th | Namule (Namur) | Fish-man | Survived; unseen since | SBS Vol. 58 |
| 9th | Blenheim | Huge sword and raw strength | Survived; unseen since | SBS Vol. 58 |
| 10th | Curiel | Guns and bazookas | Survived (burned by Akainu); unseen since | SBS Vol. 58 |
| 11th | Kingdew | Iron gauntlets, hand-to-hand | Survived; unseen since | SBS Vol. 58 |
| 12th | Haruta | Saber; fast, agile swordsman | Survived; unseen since | SBS Vol. 58 |
| 13th | Atmos “Water Buffalo” | Two large swords | Survived; unseen since | Story (Ch. 556) |
| 14th | Speed Jil (Speed Jiru) | Jousting lance and shield | Survived; unseen since | SBS Vol. 58 |
| 15th | Fossa | Katana wreathed in flames (method never explained) | Survived; unseen since | SBS Vol. 58 |
| 16th | Izo (Izou) | Twin pistols; samurai of Wano | Killed fighting CP0 during the Onigashima raid (Ch. 1041) | SBS Vol. 58 |
“Unseen since” means the commander has not appeared in the present-day story after the Payback War (Ch. 820, 909). Several of them do appear in Wano-arc flashbacks set decades earlier (Ch. 963–966), but those scenes say nothing about where they are now.
A few names have more than one English spelling: Namule or Namur, Speed Jil or Speed Jiru, and Izo or Izou.
Who led the 2nd Division before Ace?
Kozuki Oden. When Whitebeard first split his crew into divisions (five at the time), he made Oden commander of the 2nd Division (Ch. 965). Oden later left to sail with Roger and was executed in Wano years afterward (Ch. 972).
Ace took the 2nd Division after Whitebeard recruited him (Ch. 552). Marshall D. Teach was a member of Ace’s division, not a commander. Thatch’s murder by Teach is what sent Ace after him and led to the war (Ch. 552).
Is Marco the second-in-command?
Not officially. Marco’s title is 1st Division Commander, and the manga never gives him a first-mate or vice-captain title. Oda also stated in SBS Volume 59 that all the commanders are equal in rank, and that the division number does not show authority.
In practice Marco acted closest to a right-hand man. He stood beside Whitebeard at Marineford, and he led the survivors in the Payback War (Ch. 820). So “Marco is Whitebeard’s number two” is a fair reading of the story, not an official rank.
Each division did have its own job. The Vivre Card databook calls the 3rd Division the combat division and the 5th the swordsman division. A light novel names Thatch the crew’s head chef.
Which commanders have Devil Fruits?
Only four commanders are confirmed Devil Fruit users.
| Commander | Fruit | Type | Where the name comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marco | Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix | Mythical Zoan | Story |
| Ace | Mera Mera no Mi | Logia | Story |
| Jozu | Kira Kira no Mi | Paramecia | Vivre Card databook |
| Blamenco | Poke Poke no Mi | Paramecia | SBS Vol. 98 |
Jozu and Blamenco use their powers at Marineford, but their fruit names never appear in the chapters themselves. For the other commanders, the manga neither confirms nor rules out a Devil Fruit. Fossa’s burning sword is the one open question, since the manga never explains it.
Which Whitebeard commanders died?
Three of the sixteen commanders are dead, plus one former commander. They died in three separate events, not in a single battle.
| Commander | When | How | Chapter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thatch (4th) | Before Marineford | Murdered by Teach for the Yami Yami no Mi | Ch. 440, 552 |
| Ace (2nd) | Marineford | Shielded Luffy from Akainu’s magma fist | Ch. 573–574 |
| Izo (16th) | Raid on Onigashima | Fell while taking down CP0 agent Maha; buried in Ringo | Ch. 1041, 1052 |
| Kozuki Oden (former 2nd) | ~20 years before the story | Executed by Kaido and Orochi | Ch. 972 |
Whitebeard himself died at Marineford after the Blackbeard Pirates ambushed him (Ch. 576). Ace was the only commander killed in the war. Every other commander who fought there survived, though some were badly hurt.
What happened to the commanders at Marineford?
- Marco was pierced by Kizaru’s lasers and later fought Akainu alongside Vista.
- Jozu was frozen solid by Aokiji (Ch. 568–569), and his right arm shattered. Blenheim carried him off the battlefield (Ch. 573–574).
- Curiel took a direct hit from Akainu and was burned, but survived.
- Vista dueled Mihawk and later fought Akainu (Ch. 574).
One detail confuses many fans: in the original magazine version of Chapter 590, Jozu still had both arms at the funeral. Volume 60 corrected this, so the collected edition shows his right arm missing. Jozu did lose the arm.
What happened to the Whitebeard Pirates after Marineford?
- The funeral (Ch. 590). With Shanks’s help, the crew buried Whitebeard and Ace in the New World near Whitebeard’s homeland. Every surviving commander attended.
- The Payback War (Ch. 820). About a year later, Marco led the remnants against the Blackbeard Pirates. Both sides brought their full forces, and the Whitebeard Pirates lost badly. Blackbeard was then recognized as an Emperor in Whitebeard’s place. The manga gives almost no detail on who fought whom.
- Scattered (Ch. 820, 909). After the defeat, the commanders dropped out of sight. Marco went to Sphinx, Whitebeard’s home village, and works there as a doctor (Ch. 909).
- Wano (Ch. 981–1052). Marco and Izo joined the raid on Onigashima to avenge Oden (Ch. 981, 984). Marco fought King and Queen together (Ch. 1005–1007). Izo died there.
- Marco retires (Ch. 1059). Back on Sphinx, Marco turned down Shanks’s offer to join him and said he was done with piracy.
Edward Weevil and Miss Buckin
During the timeskip, Edward Weevil, who claims to be Whitebeard’s biological son, and his mother Miss Buckin hunted down Whitebeard’s former allies for his fortune. Weevil wiped out many of the subordinate crews (Ch. 802). Whether he really is Whitebeard’s son has never been confirmed.
His story has since moved on. While Marco was in Wano, Weevil defended Sphinx from corrupt Marines. Admiral Ryokugyu then defeated and arrested him (Ch. 1073). As of Chapter 1196, he is not hunting anyone.
Whitebeard commander bounties
Only a few bounties are known. The rest, including Jozu’s and Vista’s, have never been published.
| Name | Bounty | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Whitebeard (captain) | 5,046,000,000 berries | Ch. 957 |
| Marco | 1,374,000,000 berries | Vivre Card databook |
| Ace | 550,000,000 berries | Wanted poster from a One Piece Film: Strong World tie-in |
| Izo | 510,000,000 berries | Vivre Card databook |
“Ranking” lists that give a figure for every commander are guesses.
Is Haruta a girl?
Probably not. Haruta looks young, and the anime cast a woman as Haruta’s Japanese voice. But Oda said in SBS Volume 76 that no women from Whitebeard’s crew fought at Marineford, which makes Haruta a man. Whitey Bay was later shown as a former member in a Wano flashback (Ch. 963), but she was not among the commanders at the war.
FAQ
How many division commanders did Whitebeard have?
Sixteen, one for each division. Oda gave the full list of names and division numbers in the SBS of Volume 58.
Which Whitebeard commanders are dead?
Thatch (killed by Teach before Marineford), Ace (killed by Akainu at Marineford, Chapters 573–574) and Izo (died on Onigashima, Chapter 1041). Former 2nd Division commander Kozuki Oden was executed years earlier (Chapter 972).
Where is Marco now?
On Sphinx, Whitebeard’s home island, working as a doctor. After the Wano arc he told Shanks he was retiring from piracy (Chapter 1059).
Was Blackbeard a Whitebeard commander?
No. Marshall D. Teach was a member of Ace’s 2nd Division. The 4th Division commander was Thatch, whom Teach murdered for the Yami Yami no Mi.
Did Jozu lose his arm?
Yes. Aokiji froze him and his right arm shattered (Chapters 568–569). The magazine version of Chapter 590 showed both arms by mistake; Volume 60 corrected it.
