Quick answer

  • As of Volume 108 (April 2026), 13 characters in the manga know or have all but worked out that Conan is Shinichi: Agasa, Yusaku, Yukiko, Akemi, Heiji, Haibara, Vermouth, Eisuke, Masumi Sera, Akai (Subaru), Mary, Kaitou Kid and Rei Furuya (Amuro).
  • Conan told Agasa, Akemi, Heiji and Eisuke himself. His parents heard it from Agasa, and the rest figured it out on their own.
  • Vermouth is the only Black Organization member in the manga who knows. In the movies, Irish and Pinga also found out, but neither passed it on.
  • Ran and Kogoro still do not know. Ran came closest in Episode 96 and Episodes 398–400, and each time Conan escaped with outside help.

In the Detective Conan manga, 13 characters know (or have all but worked out) that Conan Edogawa is Shinichi Kudo. Conan told four of them himself: Professor Agasa, Heiji Hattori, Akemi Miyano and Eisuke Hondou. His parents heard it from Agasa. The rest figured it out alone, including Ai Haibara, Vermouth, Shuichi Akai, Masumi Sera, Mary, Kaitou Kid and, most recently, Rei Furuya (Amuro).

Ran and Kogoro still do not know, although Ran has come very close several times. This guide lists everyone who knows, how and when they found out (manga File and anime episode), and whether Conan knows that they know. The second half covers the closest calls. It is current as of Volume 108 (April 2026) and contains spoilers up to that point.

A quick note on names and numbers. Detective Conan is published in English as Case Closed. VIZ’s English manga renames some characters (Shinichi is “Jimmy Kudo”, Ran is “Rachel Moore”), but this guide uses the original names most fans use. Episode numbers are the Japanese broadcast numbers. Some English releases number the early episodes differently.

Kaitou Kid Calls Conan a “high school detective” (File 1018). Later disguises himself as Shinichi at Conan’s request File 1018 (Vol. 96); Files 1119–1122 (Vol. 105) Episodes 983–984; Episodes 1193–1194 Yes

Some notes on the less obvious entries:

  • Kaitou Kid. The manga never shows exactly how Kid learned the secret. In the Azure Throne case (Files 1119–1122, Episodes 1193–1194), Kid disguises himself as Shinichi at Conan’s request. Conan also asks him why his face looks so much like Shinichi’s. That exchange makes it clear that both sides know.
  • Rei Furuya. Amuro thinks it through in File 1136: if the boy from seven years ago is Conan, then Conan is Shinichi. Some fans read this as not yet 100% confirmed, but it is as close as the manga gets without a direct statement. Haibara’s soliloquy for that chapter is simply “Kudo-kun, you were sooo careless.”
  • Akai. Subaru may have suspected much earlier. He asked Ran some pointed questions soon after moving into the Kudo house. File 813 is where he gets proof.

Black Organization members who know Conan’s identity

In the manga, only one active Black Organization member knows: Vermouth. She has known since her early appearances. She hides it from Gin and the boss because Shinichi and Ran saved her life in New York, and because of her own secret agenda. Conan worked out that she knows during the Full Moon arc (Files 429–434, Episode 345).

Rei Furuya is technically also “Bourbon” of the Organization, but he is an undercover Public Security officer. He has shown no sign of passing the secret on.

The movies are a different story. Two Organization members learn the truth there, and neither gets to pass it on:

Member Movie What happens
Irish The Raven Chaser (Movie 13) Discovers Conan’s identity and plans to use it against Gin. He is shot dead by Chianti.
Pinga Black Iron Submarine (Movie 26) Discovers Conan’s identity during the Pacific Buoy incident. He never gets to report it.

Characters who know only in the movies (non-canon)

The movies are not manga canon, but they add several people who learn the secret:

  • Kaitou Kid learns it in The Last Wizard of the Century (Movie 3) by listening in on Conan’s calls with Agasa. His movie knowledge came long before the manga hinted at it.
  • Konosuke Jii, Kid’s assistant, is said to know in Sunflowers of Inferno (Movie 19).
  • Lupin III and his gang in Lupin III vs. Detective Conan.
  • Hiroki Sawada, the AI in The Phantom of Baker Street (Movie 6), reads Conan’s memories.

Does Ran know Conan is Shinichi?

No, not in canon. Ran has suspected it several times and has been “talked out of it” each time, usually by a phone call from “Shinichi” (Agasa or Conan using the voice-changing bowtie), or by Shinichi showing up in person thanks to a temporary antidote. The close-calls table below covers her main suspicion arcs.

Kogoro has had brief doubts too. After the TV Station case (Files 102–104, Episode 31), he noticed he always falls asleep right after Conan drags him somewhere. He dropped it when Yoko Okino really did appear. Detective Takagi once made Conan promise to tell him “who he really is” while they were defusing a bomb (File 372, Episode 304). Gosho Aoyama later said that Takagi does not suspect Conan at all. Shukichi Haneda, Sera’s brother, met young Shinichi ten years ago and seems to recognize Conan’s skills. His knowledge is not confirmed.

Episodes 724–725 Files 828–830 Sonoko and onlookers Ran hugs Conan as he fires at Kogoro, so the dart hits Sonoko. He has to solve the case in Sonoko’s voice.
Episodes 927–928 Files 1000–1005 Classmates in Kyoto Shinichi joins the school trip on an antidote, in front of Ran, Sonoko and Sera.

The two most dangerous moments are both about Ran. In Episode 96, the evidence was visual: without glasses, Conan’s face is unmistakable. In Episodes 398–400, she goes after physical proof by trying to unlock his phone. Both times Conan needed outside help to escape, from Yukiko once and from Agasa’s phone the other time.

How does Conan keep his identity secret?

Conan has four standard ways of keeping the secret:

  1. The voice-changing bowtie. A call from “Shinichi” while Conan is in the room is the fastest way to clear Ran’s doubts (Episode 7, Episodes 398–400).
  2. Temporary antidotes. Showing up as Shinichi disproves the theory, but the effect wears off at unpredictable times (Episodes 188–193, 616–621, 927–928).
  3. Helpers. Agasa, Haibara, his parents, Heiji and Kid have all covered for him. Kid even appeared as Shinichi at Conan’s request in the Azure Throne case.
  4. Looking like a kid. Most adults simply assume Conan is a bright child who picked things up from Shinichi or Kogoro.
