Quick answer

  • Reze isn’t confirmed dead: as a hybrid she revives whenever someone pulls her pin, and Makima brings her back after she’s struck down in Chapter 52.
  • She’s cut down three times: by Makima and the Angel Devil (Ch. 52), then by Chainsaw Man while serving as Makima’s brainwashed hybrid (Ch. 88 and Ch. 94).
  • After Makima dies she never appears in the present day again. Her only Part 2 appearance is Denji’s memory in Chapter 183.
  • The manga ended with Chapter 232 (March 2026) without showing or mentioning Reze in the reset world. There is no ‘Reze returns’ chapter.

Reze is not confirmed dead, but she never comes back after the Control Devil arc. Chainsaw Man cuts her down twice more after Chapter 52, and after Makima dies she never appears again except as a single memory in Part 2 (Ch. 183). The manga ended with Chapter 232 in March 2026 without showing her.

So the honest answer is “she’s out of the story, not killed off for good.” Below is every exit she gets, what the manga says about hybrids like her, and why the popular “Reze returns” chapters don’t hold up. Spoilers run to the final chapter (Ch. 232). For her powers, backstory and the Denji relationship, see our Reze explained guide. This page only covers her fate.

Is Reze dead?

Not in any final, on-page way. Reze is a hybrid, and the fan wiki sums up the rule the manga follows: hybrids survive being beheaded or cut in half, and as long as someone pulls her pin, she comes back to life. That rule is exactly why she keeps returning in Part 1.

The wiki currently lists her status as alive. That is a label, not a scene: the manga never shows her in the present day after Chapter 94, and it never shows her destroyed in a way a hybrid can’t recover from.

# Chapter What happens Who ends it
1 Ch. 52 On her way to meet Denji at the café, Makima stops her in an alley. Her arm is blown off as she reaches for her pin, and a spear thrown from a rooftop impales her. Makima holds her hand so she can’t pull the pin Makima and the Angel Devil
2 Ch. 86–88 She returns brainwashed as one of Makima’s hybrids, next to Katana Man and Quanxi. She grabs Chainsaw Man and carries him into the sky, and he beheads her in mid-air (Ch. 88) Chainsaw Man (Pochita in control)
3 Ch. 93–94 Makima brings the hybrids to the graveyard battle. Reze and the Whip Hybrid fly at “Denji,” who spins and slices Reze, the Whip Hybrid and the Spear Hybrid; all three fall (Ch. 94) Pochita, fighting in Denji’s hybrid form

Two details are worth knowing. First, Reze never speaks to Denji again after the beach in Chapter 51. In her returns she is a controlled weapon, not the girl from the café. Second, nobody in the story ever tells Denji what happened in the alley. From his side, she simply didn’t show up.

What happens to Makima’s hybrids after Makima dies?

Makima’s hold ends when she does. Denji cuts her down in the graveyard (Ch. 96) and then eats her, and in Chapter 97 he tells Kishibe she hasn’t revived.

The manga shows what happened to some of the other brainwashed hybrids afterward, and they are clearly free and alive:

Hybrid Under Makima Part 2
Katana Man Ch. 86–87, 93–94 Returns from Ch. 144 and joins Public Safety’s Special Division 7 for his own reasons
Quanxi Ch. 86–87, 93–94 Rejoins Public Safety in Special Division 7 (Ch. 143) and saves Denji’s group (Ch. 147)
Barem Bridge (Flamethrower) Ch. 86–88, 93–94 Returns as a Part 2 villain; Pochita eats him whole (Ch. 214)
Reze Ch. 86–88, 93–94 Never shown again in the present day

Makima also explains in Chapter 87 that hybrids are neither human, devil nor fiend. They are a kind of being linked to devils the Chainsaw Devil erased, yet they “somehow” still exist. (For what Chainsaw Man’s erasures do, see our list of every devil Chainsaw Man erased.)

Put together, the most reasonable reading is that Reze outlived Makima the same way Katana Man and Quanxi did. But that is an inference: the manga never says where she went.

Does Reze come back in Part 2?

No, not physically. Part 2 runs from Chapter 98 to Chapter 232, and Reze’s only appearance is a memory.

In Chapter 183, Denji jumps into a lake after throwing up the Bitterness Devil. Sinking underwater, he remembers the bitter coffee he drank with Reze at Crossroads. As the memory of her turns to face him, he thinks about how the people he loves keep disappearing from his life. It’s a flashback, not a return, and it lasts only a few panels.

The “Reze return chapter” that never happened

A lot of searches ask which chapter Reze returns in. There isn’t one. These are the chapters people point to:

Chapter Why fans expected Reze What actually happened
Ch. 183 Her face appears in Part 2 for the first time A memory only (see above)
Ch. 213 The school where Denji is staying blows up, right around the Reze Arc movie’s release Yoshida reveals he was the “switch” for the blast; the attacker in Ch. 214 is Barem, not Reze
Ch. 224 Often suggested by search autocomplete as her return Reze isn’t in it. It’s the War Devil’s moon-flag spear attack on Denji; the cast is Yoru, Denji and the Lion Devil

CBR’s review of Chapter 214 read the Barem reveal as Tatsuki Fujimoto deliberately burning down fan hopes of a Reze comeback. Whatever the intent, no chapter after 94 brings her back in the present.

Reze and the manga ending (Ch. 231–232)

In Chapter 231 (March 11, 2026), Pochita tears out his own heart and eats himself to erase Chainsaw Man from existence, creating a world where Chainsaw Man never existed. He admits he doesn’t know what that world will look like.

Chapter 232 (March 25, 2026), the final chapter, shows the new world. Denji is about to die again when Power spares him and feeds him her blood. Nayuta recruits them both and sends them to Fourth East High School to hunt devils, where Denji meets Asa.

What the ending does and doesn’t show about Reze:

Question What the manga shows
Does Reze appear in Ch. 232? No. She isn’t in the chapter’s cast
Is she mentioned? No
Is she dead in the new world? Not shown
Does she meet Denji in the new world? Not shown

Fan theory, not canon: Reze was sent to Japan to steal Chainsaw Man’s heart. If Chainsaw Man never existed, many readers argue that mission, and her meeting with Denji, never happened either. Because Makima tied hybrids to devils Chainsaw Man erased (Ch. 87), some go further and ask whether hybrids exist at all in the new world. The manga answers neither question, and it does bring back Power and Nayuta in the reset world, so the rules of the reset aren’t simple.

Did the anime or movie change Reze’s fate?

No. Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc (released in Japan on September 19, 2025) adapts the Bomb Girl arc through Chapter 52 and ends with the same alley scene. There is no movie-original rescue.

Her returns in Chapters 86–94 haven’t been animated. The next anime project, Chainsaw Man – Assassins Arc (widely called Season 2), was announced at Jump Festa ’26 in December 2025. It covers the International Assassins arc that starts at Ch. 53, so it comes before her Control Devil arc returns. No release date or format has been announced as of September 2026.

Quick answer

Reze is struck down in the alley in Chapter 52, but hybrids revive when their pin is pulled, and Makima uses her twice more (Ch. 86–88, Ch. 93–94). After Makima’s death she is never shown again, apart from Denji’s memory in Chapter 183. The manga ended in Chapter 232 without bringing her back, killing her for good, or saying where she is.

FAQ

Is Reze dead in Chainsaw Man?

Not confirmed. She’s struck down in Chapter 52 and cut down again in Chapters 88 and 94, but hybrids revive when their pin is pulled. After Makima dies she is never shown again, and the manga never confirms a final death.

Does Reze come back in Part 2?

No, not physically. Her only Part 2 appearance is Denji’s memory of drinking coffee with her in Chapter 183.

What chapter does Reze come back in?

Makima brings her back as a brainwashed hybrid in Chapter 86, and she fights in Chapters 86–88 and 93–94. There is no later return chapter; she isn’t in Chapter 224.

Who killed Reze?

In Chapter 52, Makima and the Angel Devil stop her in an alley on her way to meet Denji. Her later exits come at the hands of Chainsaw Man (Pochita) in Chapters 88 and 94.

Is Reze in the Chainsaw Man ending?

No. She doesn’t appear and isn’t mentioned in the final chapter, Chapter 232 (March 25, 2026), so her place in the reset world is unknown.
