Quick answer
- Saint Jaygarcia Saturn was the Five Elders’ Warrior God of Science and Defense (VIZ: Godhead of Science & Defense), the Elder in charge of Vegapunk and the Pacifista project (Ch. 1086, 1100).
- He appears in a monstrous gyuki form, identified in the official Episode 1144 synopsis. The free official synopses checked here do not establish its Devil Fruit classification or awakening status. An official fruit name has not been verified in the free primary sources used here.
- His regeneration and its exact mechanism need separate verification. The free official synopsis directly confirms the outcome: Imu’s power reduces Saturn to bones.
- He is dead. The official Episode 1155 synopsis describes Imu’s power reducing him to bones and introduces Garling with the Science and Defense title.

Saint Jaygarcia Saturn is dead. The official Episode 1155 synopsis describes Imu’s power reducing Saturn to bones. It also introduces Figarland Garling with the Science and Defense title. Before that, Saturn was the Five Elders’ Warrior God of Science and Defense (VIZ: “Godhead of Science & Defense”), the man who ran the Pacifista project, and the first Elder to walk onto a battlefield in person. His monstrous form is identified as a gyuki in the official Episode 1144 synopsis. Its Devil Fruit classification and awakening status require separate verification. An official fruit name has not been verified in the free primary sources used for this update.
This guide discusses Saturn’s role, monstrous appearance, Egghead actions and death. Chapter references in the existing article extend into Elbaph, but the later contract mechanism and every current-status claim have not been independently checked in the free primary sources available for this update. These remain verification holds.
Who is Saint Saturn?
Saint Jaygarcia Saturn (ジェイガルシア・サターン聖) was one of the Five Elders, the five Celestial Dragons who publicly head the World Government. He appeared with the other Elders back in Chapter 233, but his name was only revealed in Chapter 1073, and his title in Chapter 1086.
| Full name | Saint Jaygarcia Saturn (romanized in Ch. 1089) |
| Title | Warrior God of Science and Defense (VIZ: Godhead of Science & Defense), Ch. 1086 |
| Role | One of the Five Elders; a scientist by trade (Ch. 1102) |
| Age | Over 200. He looked the same 200 years ago (Ch. 1125) |
| Devil Fruit | Gyuki form; Devil Fruit classification and awakening not verified in the free official sources used here |
| Status | Dead. Killed by Imu in Ch. 1125; replaced by Figarland Garling |
As Warrior God of Science and Defense, Saturn oversaw the World Government’s science and weapons programs. That is why he, not another Elder, handled Dr. Vegapunk and the Pacifista project (Ch. 1100, 1102), and why he personally led the Marine fleet to Egghead to kill Vegapunk (Ch. 1073, 1089).
He treated ordinary people as disposable. He told Vice Admiral Doberman to think of human lives as insects that will always breed to make up for any loss (Ch. 1090).
What is Saturn’s Devil Fruit?
The official Episode 1128 synopsis describes Saturn arriving in a monstrous form, and Episode 1144 calls the creature a gyuki. Those descriptions establish the visible form. They do not, by themselves, establish a Devil Fruit model or an awakened Zoan classification.
The appearance, its proposed classification and its name should be checked separately:
- Fruit name: not verified here. The free official synopses identify the monstrous form without supplying a Devil Fruit name. That is the verification limit of this update, rather than a survey of every chapter, SBS or databook.
- Awakening is not verified here. A smoke-like visual effect alone is insufficient to certify the classification. The official Episode 1128 synopsis describes a monstrous arrival, and Episode 1144 identifies the gyuki; neither supplies an awakening classification.
Hybrid form vs full beast form
| Hybrid form (Ch. 1094–1107) | Full beast form (Ch. 1108 onward) | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Human upper body with horns on a giant spider body | Horned spider; face still recognizable, eyes “bizarre” (Sanji, Ch. 1108) |
| Size | Holds adult Bonney in one hand; towers over Kuma | Comparable, with eight legs (arms become legs) |
| Main attack | Pointed legs that impale; pierced Kuma’s Pacifista body (Ch. 1103) | Corrosive venom from the legs; explosive venom orbs (Ch. 1111) |
| Mobility | Walks | Spins horizontally to fly back to the battlefield (Ch. 1109) |
| Durability | Shrugs off Sabo’s Fire Fist (Ch. 1085) and Bonney’s katana (Ch. 1094) | Legs were destroyed by Usopp, Lilith and Brook, but regrew |
Saturn’s powers explained
The invisible force that makes people bleed
Saturn’s signature ability is an invisible, telekinesis-like force that he triggers with a look, marked by his glowing eyes. He used it in both human form and transformed form, so it is not clearly a fruit power. Vegapunk, who knows the Devil Fruit encyclopedia, only guessed that it might be one (Ch. 1095).
What it did on panel:
- Burst the head of a Marine who broke the rule against looking at an Elder (Ch. 1094).
- Knocked Bonney and Sanji back as if hit, and pinned Vegapunk’s group to the ground (Ch. 1095).
- Pinned a young Kuma at God Valley 38 years ago (Ch. 1096).
- Left Vice Admiral Doberman badly wounded for questioning Vegapunk’s broadcast (Ch. 1125).
Gear 5 Luffy was wounded by it but kept moving (Ch. 1107). That is the only case in the manga where it failed to stop someone.
Regeneration: observed effects and the verification limit
Saturn healed a katana through the chest in seconds (Ch. 1095), survived Franky’s Radical Beam (Ch. 1104), regrew a torn-off arm along with his clothes (Ch. 1104), and regenerated after Luffy and Bonney punched holes through his body (Ch. 1121). Luffy flatly called the Elders “immortal” (Ch. 1111). Bonney’s age-changing power had no effect on him (Ch. 1103).
The existing account attributes this regeneration to a later Covenant with Imu (Chapters 1167–1169). Those original passages were not accessible for this free-source review, so that mechanism is held for verification rather than presented as established here. The official Episode 1155 synopsis confirms Saturn’s destruction by Imu’s power, without explaining the contractual rules.
Abyss, Haki and other abilities
- Abyss (magic circle). Saturn teleported from his ship onto Egghead through a glowing pentagram (Ch. 1094) and later opened four more to summon the other Elders from Mary Geoise (Ch. 1109–1110). He also spoke with them and with Imu telepathically (Ch. 1109, 1125).
- Haki. His arrival came with black lightning (Ch. 1094). He used Observation Haki to find hidden Den Den Mushi (Ch. 1114) and Conqueror’s Haki to knock snails unconscious (Ch. 1115). He stayed conscious through Joy Boy’s Conqueror’s Haki burst that knocked out every Vice Admiral in range (Ch. 1122).
What did Saturn do in the Egghead arc?
Saturn was the main antagonist of the Egghead arc. Here is the chapter-by-chapter record of his actions.
| Chapter | What Saturn did |
|---|---|
| 1073 | Boards Kizaru’s fleet for Egghead; calls Vegapunk’s execution “a shame” |
| 1089–1090 | Fleet surrounds Egghead; orders the evacuated staff’s ships sunk; tells Kizaru to open the attack |
| 1094 | Teleports onto Egghead in hybrid form, bursts a Marine’s head with a look; Bonney stabs him |
| 1095 | Heals instantly, injures Bonney and Sanji with a glance, tries to impale a drained Luffy; Franky knocks Luffy clear |
| 1096 | Flashback: pins the young Kuma at God Valley and tells him buccaneers are born slaves |
| 1100, 1102 | Flashbacks: sets Kuma’s three conditions (Warlord, weapon, no free will) and orders a self-destruct switch in him |
| 1103 | Reveals he gave Bonney her fruit and her disease; moves to execute her; Kuma arrives and punches him across the city |
| 1104 | Emerges with his arm torn off and regrows it; calls a Buster Call with Kizaru |
| 1105–1106 | Orders the Pacifista to shoot Bonney and Kuma; Bonney overrides him; he impales Vegapunk |
| 1107 | Beaten into a building by Gear 5 Luffy; meets Devon and Van Augur of the Blackbeard Pirates |
| 1108 | Appears in full beast form; Kizaru lands the fatal shot on Vegapunk during the melee |
| 1109–1110 | Luffy flattens him and throws him at the fleet; he flies back and summons the other four Elders |
| 1111 | Spits explosive venom; Luffy bats it back with a rubber baseball bat |
| 1112–1114 | Attacks Robin, Nami, Usopp, Chopper, Brook and Lilith in the Labophase, then hunts Den Den Mushi at the power plant |
| 1117 | Joins the attack on the Iron Giant Emet; Warcury rams it into the sea |
| 1120–1121 | Boards the giants’ ship to kill Bonney and Kuma; Bonney transforms into Nika and, with Luffy, punches him full of holes |
| 1122 | Emet releases Joy Boy’s Conqueror’s Haki; the other Elders vanish back to Mary Geoise, Saturn is left alone as the Straw Hats escape |
| 1125 | Reports to the Vice Admirals, injures Doberman, then is killed by Imu |
Two points matter for the bigger story. Saturn is why Bonney is sick and why Kuma became a Pacifista: he experimented on Bonney and her mother Ginny (Ch. 1103), then used Bonney’s cure as leverage to erase Kuma’s will (Ch. 1100). And his arrogance undid him: he trusted a self-destruct switch that Vegapunk had secretly rewired to only shut Kuma down (Ch. 1103–1104).
Is Saturn dead in One Piece?
Yes. Saturn died in Chapter 1125, “What Death Means” (Episode 1155), the final chapter of the Egghead arc.
After the Straw Hats escaped, Saturn met the nine Vice Admirals on a Marine ship. He refused their request to chase the pirates to Elbaph, saying Vegapunk’s broadcast was the real failure. When Doberman asked whether the broadcast was true, Saturn wounded him with a glare. Moments later, a black substance began pouring out of Saturn’s body and he fell to his knees. In Mary Geoise, Figarland Garling walked into the Room of Authority in an Elder’s suit and announced he was the new Warrior God of Science and Defense.
Saturn understood immediately: Imu was punishing him for letting “Joy Boy” escape. He begged for mercy and pleaded that the Nika fruit’s power was too unpredictable. Imu did not answer. Saturn’s body withered, exploded, and left only a skeleton.
Note the irony: Saturn had secured all three mission goals, York, Punk Records and the Mother Flame plant (Ch. 1090, 1125). Imu still judged Nika’s escape the failure that mattered, and did not tell the other four Elders before appointing Garling. The destruction of Saturn and Garling’s new title are the outcomes directly documented in the official Episode 1155 synopsis. Later appearances through Chapter 1196 have not been verified in this update.
The Episode 1155 synopsis establishes two concrete outcomes: Imu’s power reduces Saturn to bones, and Garling is introduced with the Science and Defense title. Those outcomes are directly documented; the exact later contract mechanism needs its own source.
Was Saturn stronger than the other Elders?
The manga never ranks the Elders. It does show Saturn as their coordinator: he led the Egghead operation, summoned the other four and directed the hunt for the broadcast. Here is where all six stand.
| Elder | Title (Ch. 1086) | Monstrous form (Ch. 1110) | Status as of Ch. 1196 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saint Jaygarcia Saturn | Warrior God of Science and Defense | Gyuki (ox-headed spider yokai) | Dead (Ch. 1125) |
| Saint Marcus Mars | Warrior God of Environment | Itsumade (reptilian bird yokai) | Alive |
| Saint Topman Warcury | Warrior God of Justice | Fengxi (four-tusked boar demon) | Alive |
| Saint Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro | Warrior God of Finance | Bakotsu (skeletal horse yokai) | Alive |
| Saint Shepherd Ju Peter | Warrior God of Agriculture | Sandworm | Alive |
| Saint Figarland Garling | Warrior God of Science and Defense (from Ch. 1125) | No Devil Fruit confirmed | Alive |
The listed forms should not be treated as verified fruit names. The official Episode 1144 synopsis names their monstrous forms. Classifying every form as an awakened Mythical Zoan, or establishing the later contractual source of regeneration, requires separate original-text verification.
Saturn before Egghead: a short history
- About 200 years ago. After the Iron Giant Emet attacked Mary Geoise, Saturn secretly ordered scientists to study it instead of destroying it, hoping to turn it into a weapon (Ch. 1125).
- 38 years ago, God Valley. Saturn attended the Native Hunting Competition and confronted the young slave Kuma (Ch. 1095–1096). Later in the incident, Imu used Saturn’s body as a vessel to appear on the island (Ch. 1162).
- 12 years ago. Saturn’s experiments on Ginny and the newborn Bonney gave Bonney the Toshi Toshi no Mi and the Sapphire Scales disease (Ch. 1103).
- 4 years ago. He dictated the terms of Kuma’s transformation into a Pacifista (Ch. 1100) and later ordered the self-destruct switch (Ch. 1102).
- During the Wano conflict. He had CP0 interfere in Luffy’s fight with Kaido to stop the Nika fruit awakening (Ch. 1044).
Common questions and theories
Was Saturn really the first Elder to fight? He was the first to leave Mary Geoise for a battlefield. The Elders had already transformed once before, against Sabo in the Empty Throne room (Ch. 1085), but Egghead was the first time one of them personally joined a military operation.
Is the gyuki connected to Bonney’s disease? This is a fan reading, not canon. In folklore the gyuki is said to cause incurable illness and to produce poison; Saturn infected Ginny with an incurable disease and his beast form secretes venom. The manga has never drawn that connection on the page.
Could Saturn come back? His destruction is documented in the official Episode 1155 synopsis. This update has not checked every later chapter through the article’s stated current point, so it does not certify a later non-appearance or a rule making a return impossible.

Is Saturn dead in One Piece?
Yes. The official Episode 1155 synopsis describes Imu’s power reducing Saturn to bones and introduces Garling with the Science and Defense title. The exact later Covenant rules and Saturn’s non-appearance through Chapter 1196 remain outside the verified scope of this update.
Who replaced Saturn in the Five Elders?
Saint Figarland Garling, former commander of the Knights of God. He entered the Room of Authority as the new Warrior God of Science and Defense in the same chapter Saturn died (Ch. 1125).
How does Saturn make people’s heads explode?
He projects an invisible, telekinesis-like force triggered by his gaze. It burst a Marine’s head (Ch. 1094), knocked Bonney and Sanji back (Ch. 1095) and badly injured Vice Admiral Doberman (Ch. 1125). Whether it is part of his Devil Fruit is not confirmed.
