The Nine Red Scabbards are Kin’emon, Denjiro, Kiku, Raizo, Kanjuro, Ashura Doji, Kawamatsu, Inuarashi and Nekomamushi. Four of those nine jump forward twenty years; the other five live through the intervening period.

Two members of that original nine die during the Onigashima conflict: Ashura Doji and Kanjuro. Izo also dies, but he is not an additional tenth name in the original nine. This guide distinguishes the original membership, the group assembled for the raid and the survivors. Spoilers cover Wano’s conclusion.

All nine members and their paths

Member The twenty-year gap Position during the raid Fate by Wano’s conclusion
Kin’emon Travels forward with Toki’s power Leads the effort to restore the Kozuki Alive
Kiku Travels forward Loyal retainer Alive, loses an arm
Raizo Travels forward Loyal retainer and ninja Alive
Kanjuro Travels forward Exposed as Orochi’s informant Dead
Denjiro Lives through the gap as Kyoshiro Returns openly to the Kozuki side Alive
Ashura Doji Lives through the gap as Shutenmaru Rejoins the effort Dead
Kawamatsu Lives through the gap, including imprisonment Returns to the retainers Alive
Inuarashi Lives through the gap on Zou Fights with the retainers and the minks Alive
Nekomamushi Lives through the gap on Zou Fights with the retainers and the minks Alive

The table uses the end of Wano as its status checkpoint. It is not a claim that every survivor remains in the same job or location indefinitely afterward.

Why the original nine still matter

The title identifies a particular group associated with Oden. It does not mean that every later group photograph must contain exactly those nine people, all still loyal and alive.

The betrayal changes who is standing with the group at Onigashima. Izo’s return then gives readers another familiar retainer beside them. Without separating the original roster from that later assembly, it is easy to count ten people or mistakenly replace one historical member in every earlier scene.

Is Izo one of the Nine Red Scabbards?

Izo is Oden’s former retainer and Kiku’s older brother. He leaves Wano with Oden and later serves with the Whitebeard Pirates. Those connections make him central to the story, but not an extra name in the conventional original nine listed above.

During the raid he returns to help. For a scene-specific question, include him among the fighters present. For the question “who were the original nine?”, keep the roster distinct. Both statements can be true without changing the number attached to the historical group.

Who traveled twenty years into the future?

The four Scabbards who make the jump are Kin’emon, Kiku, Raizo and Kanjuro. Momonosuke travels with them, but he is Oden’s son, not a fifth Scabbard.

Toki’s power sends people forward. It does not make the five who stay behind skip those years, and it does not let the travelers simply return to their old lives in the past.

Waiting was not one shared experience

Denjiro conceals himself behind the identity of Kyoshiro. Ashura Doji lives as Shutenmaru. Kawamatsu endures imprisonment. Inuarashi and Nekomamushi return to Zou.

That gives the twenty-year gap several different meanings: infiltration, survival, confinement and leadership elsewhere. The five do not spend two decades sitting in one hideout with identical information.

This also explains why recognizing a retainer is not the same as understanding their allegiance. Denjiro’s public position as Kyoshiro conceals a longer commitment. Kanjuro, by contrast, performs loyalty while passing information to Orochi.

The age gap is part of the reunion

The travelers have not lived the same twenty years as the people who remained. A reunion therefore brings together people with unequal stretches of lived experience.

It is better to state the difference in elapsed time than to invent precise ages for every participant. The time travel explains the contrast without requiring unsupported birthdays or a new arithmetic total in every row.

Kanjuro’s betrayal and the raid roster

Kanjuro is not merely a retainer who loses confidence during the final battle. His role as an informant is exposed before the attack on Onigashima. The official Episode 977 summary explicitly identifies his performance and the information he sent to Orochi.

His ability to draw also becomes part of that deception. The poor drawings he showed his companions did not reveal the full extent of what he could do.

Why count a traitor in the original nine?

Because membership history and genuine loyalty answer different questions. Removing Kanjuro from every earlier list would make it harder to explain who traveled with the others, which plans were leaked and why the revelation hurts them.

A clear roster can mark his betrayal while still showing his place in the group’s history. It does not need to call him loyal merely because it includes his name.

Who dies and who survives?

Ashura Doji dies after protecting his companions from the explosive false Oden. Kanjuro also dies during the Onigashima conflict. The story later confirms Ashura and Izo’s deaths as Wano comes out of the battle (Chapter 1052).

Kiku survives her severe injuries. Kin’emon also survives. A dramatic injury scene alone is not sufficient reason to add either of them to a confirmed-death list.

Two different death counts

If the question concerns the original nine, the count here is two: Ashura Doji and Kanjuro. If it concerns Oden’s retainers who die in the raid, Izo must also be discussed, with the broader scope stated clearly.

That distinction matters more than choosing the largest possible number for a headline. The roster and the event need the same boundary before the count is meaningful.

The Wano restoration in sequence

Stage What changes for the group
Oden’s generation and the twenty-year divide Four listed Scabbards travel forward; the remaining five follow the different paths shown in the roster.
Zou alliance The minks reveal that they protected Raizo. Momonosuke asks for help restoring the Kozuki and opening Wano.
Onigashima raid The exposed betrayal changes the active group; the original membership and raid participants no longer match.
After the battle Momonosuke rules Wano; Inuarashi and Nekomamushi appoint Carrot the new ruler of the Mokomo Dukedom.

What happens to the survivors?

The surviving retainers support Momonosuke’s restored rule. The official Episode 1083 summary states the concrete succession decision: Inuarashi and Nekomamushi appoint Carrot as the new ruler of the Mokomo Dukedom. The change concerns leadership of Zou; it does not remove their historical membership of Oden’s nine.

For Izo’s other affiliation, see our Whitebeard commanders guide. The wider One Piece factions guide separates the Kozuki restoration from the pirate crews allied with it.

Source and counting note

Names and affiliations are checked against official character entries; major turns are checked against official anime summaries and chapter-referenced sources. The table is a Wano-end roster, not a current, chapter-by-chapter status service.
