Quick answer
- Hana Kurusu is a Culling Game player who shares her body with the Angel, a Heian Era sorcerer incarnated through a deal with Kenjaku. Unlike most incarnations, the Angel lets Hana stay in control (Ch. 199).
- Hana has loved Megumi since he rescued her from a cursed spirit when they were small children, which he never knew (Ch. 210). The Angel’s own goal is to kill every incarnated player, above all Sukuna, the “Disgraced One” (Ch. 199).
- The Angel’s technique extinguishes any cursed technique. With Jacob’s Ladder, Hana nearly purged Sukuna from Megumi (Ch. 213), lost her right arm to him (Ch. 214), and freed Gojo from the Prison Realm (Ch. 221).
- Hana survives the main series. In Chapter 270 Megumi promises to be her “right arm” and she takes it as a proposal; the sequel Modulo later reveals she has died.

Hana Kurusu is a Culling Game player who shares her body with the Angel, a sorcerer from the Heian Era. Hana has loved Megumi Fushiguro since he rescued her when they were small children, and Megumi did not know it. The Angel incarnated for a different reason: to wipe out every incarnated player, above all Sukuna, whom she calls “the Disgraced One.”
This article covers the Jujutsu Kaisen manga through the final chapter (Ch. 271) and mentions one detail from the spin-off Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo at the end. Chapter numbers refer to the manga.
Who is Hana Kurusu?
Hana is a teenage girl about the same age as Yuji and Megumi. She has a blonde bob, green eyes, white feathered wings on her back and a halo over her head. The wings and halo come from the Angel. Tengen first mentions her as a thousand-year-old sorcerer “who calls herself an angel” (Ch. 145). She properly enters the story in the Tokyo No. 1 Colony (Ch. 173).
| Hana Kurusu | The Angel | |
|---|---|---|
| Who | Present-day girl, the vessel | Heian Era sorcerer, the incarnation |
| Controls the body? | Yes, by default | No; speaks through a mouth on Hana’s cheek or hand |
| Main motive | Become worthy of standing beside Megumi | Kill every incarnated player, chiefly Sukuna |
| First appearance | Ch. 145 (named Ch. 199) | Ch. 199 |
In the anime, Hana is first glimpsed in Episode 50.
Why the protagonists need the Angel
Hana’s importance begins with a practical obstacle: Gojo is sealed away. The Episode 50 synopsis takes the group to Tengen to ask how to undo that seal. By Episode 54, their entry into the colony has two explicit objectives: find the Angel who can undo Prison Realm’s seal, and approach high-scoring players to add rules. Finding her is therefore part of the rescue plan, alongside changing the game’s conditions.
Hana and the Angel: how the incarnation works
Most incarnated sorcerers in the Culling Game erase their vessel’s mind. The Angel did not. She made a deal with Kenjaku to be incarnated after death, like many sorcerers over the centuries, but she chose to live symbiotically with Hana and left Hana in control (Ch. 199, 220).
When the Angel wants to speak, a mouth opens on Hana’s cheek or hand. Yuji immediately notices this is like him and Sukuna (Ch. 199). The big difference is the relationship. The Angel teases Hana about her crush but backs off when Hana asks her to keep it secret (Ch. 199).
How the Angel ended up in Hana’s body, and how the two first met, is never shown. The Angel also cannot jump to a new host. She says only Sukuna learned how to split his soul across several cursed objects (Ch. 220).
Why did the Angel incarnate?
The Angel’s goal is to eliminate every incarnated Culling Game player. She believes taking over a living person and crushing their ego violates “God’s Law.” When Megumi asks, she says “God’s Law” is just the name she gives her own creed (Ch. 199).
Her top target is the “Disgraced One,” which turns out to be Sukuna (Ch. 199). The grudge goes back a thousand years. Chapter 238 says that in the Heian Era, Sukuna repelled an elite force of the Abe clan that included the Angel.
That goal shaped her deal with Megumi and Yuji. They needed her to open the Prison Realm and free Gojo. She said she could probably do it, but only after they helped her kill the Disgraced One (Ch. 199). It was a hard bargain, since Sukuna was inside Yuji.
She was honest about one limit. Her technique could almost never turn an incarnated player back into a normal person. It was far more likely to kill the vessel too (Ch. 199).
The Angel’s cursed technique and Jacob’s Ladder
The Angel’s innate technique extinguishes any cursed technique, including barriers, seals and cursed objects (Ch. 145, 199). The manga never gives the base technique a formal name; English fans often call it “Technique Extinguishment.” Because it cancels barriers, Hana was the only player who could cross Colony borders before the 12th rule was added (Ch. 199, 211).
Her named move is Maximum Output: Jacob’s Ladder (Yakobu no Hashigo), an extension technique (Ch. 213). Hana conjures a four-winged trumpet of light, a huge magic circle appears in the sky, and a pillar of light falls on the target. The name is a pun: the kanji read yakobu, the Japanese form of “Jacob.”
| Use | Target | Result | Chapter |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Sukuna, newly inside Megumi | Badly hurts Sukuna; Hana stops when he fakes being Megumi | Ch. 213 |
| 2nd | Back of the Prison Realm | Destroys it and frees Gojo | Ch. 221 |
| Copied | Sukuna, inside Yuta’s domain | Yuta uses it with Copy to weaken Sukuna’s hold on Megumi | Ch. 251 |
| 3rd | Sukuna in Shinjuku | Weaker without her arm; Sukuna climbs up through the light | Ch. 263–264 |
How Hana met Megumi
Hana’s story with Megumi starts years before the Culling Game. As a little girl, she was held captive for over a year by a cursed spirit that acted like a mother and made children who complained disappear. A white Divine Dog led her out. It was young Megumi’s shikigami, and Gojo was with him (Ch. 210).
Hana fell for Megumi and decided it was fate. She began helping people so that one day she would be worthy of standing beside him (Ch. 210). Megumi never knew any of this.
They met again in the Tokyo No. 1 Colony. After beating Reggie Star, Megumi collapsed, and Hana flew down and carried him away (Ch. 173). When he woke two days later, she greeted him as her “Destined One” (Ch. 199). The Angel almost explained why, and Hana covered the mouth.
Hana vs. Sukuna: what happened on the rooftop?
Sukuna used a binding vow to take Yuji’s body, knocked Hana out and moved into Megumi by feeding him one of his fingers (Ch. 212). The Angel woke Hana up at once.
The Angel’s call was cold but logical: they had to strike before Sukuna settled into Megumi, even if Megumi got hurt. Hana fired Jacob’s Ladder at maximum output, begging Sukuna to give Megumi back (Ch. 213). It worked. Sukuna was visibly injured, and cursed energy was being pulled out of Megumi.
Then Sukuna pretended Megumi had taken control. He said he remembered her and opened his arms. The Angel told Hana not to go, again and again, but Hana ran to him (Ch. 213). Sukuna tore off her right arm and a wing and threw her off the rooftop (Ch. 214).
Did Hana Kurusu die?
Not in the main series. Rin Amai and Takaba saved her after the fall, and Shoko Ieiri treated her, but the arm could not be regrown (Ch. 220). With Hana unable to fight, the Angel still kept her side of the deal. Hana used Jacob’s Ladder on the Prison Realm’s “Back” at a Jujutsu High training ground in Saitama, and Gojo came out (Ch. 221).
She returned for the final raid on Sukuna. At Yuta’s request, Todo used Boogie Woogie to put her in the air above Sukuna, and she fired Jacob’s Ladder again (Ch. 263). Without her arm the output was weaker. Sukuna climbed the falling debris through the light and threw a Black Flash at her, and Todo took the blow. Both were knocked out of the fight (Ch. 264). Hana recovered after Sukuna’s defeat.
Do Hana and Megumi end up together?
The manga ends on a hopeful, unfinished note. In Chapter 270, the Angel tells Hana that the way Sukuna tricked her shows Megumi’s memories of her had come back. Hana is still too embarrassed to face him.
When they meet in a hallway, Megumi feels responsible for what his body did. He tells her that from now on he will be her right arm. Hana takes it as a marriage proposal and asks when the ceremony will be. Megumi stammers that he has a mission and leaves (Ch. 270).
So Hana’s feelings are confirmed, and Megumi clearly cares about her. But the series never shows them as a couple. The same chapter gives Hana a new job: with Yuji, she is to help strip cursed objects from incarnated players who survived the Culling Game.
What Modulo says
The sequel spin-off Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is set decades later. In Modulo Chapter 13, an elderly Nobara says Yuji vanished after Hana’s funeral. So by that era Hana has died. Modulo does not say how or when, or whether she and Megumi married.
FAQ
Is Hana Kurusu the Angel?
Not exactly. Hana is a present-day girl, and the Angel is a Heian Era sorcerer incarnated in her body. They share it symbiotically, with Hana in control and the Angel speaking through a mouth on Hana’s cheek or hand (Chapter 199).
Why does the Angel want to kill Sukuna?
The Angel wants to eliminate every incarnated player because taking over a living person violates her creed, “God’s Law.” Sukuna, the “Disgraced One,” is her main target (Chapter 199). Chapter 238 adds that in the Heian Era Sukuna repelled an Abe clan force that included her.
What does Jacob’s Ladder do?
It is the maximum-output extension of the Angel’s technique. A pillar of light falls from a magic circle and extinguishes any cursed technique it hits. Hana used it on Sukuna (Chapters 213 and 263) and to destroy the Prison Realm and free Gojo (Chapter 221).
Does Megumi know Hana?
At first he does not remember that he saved her as a child (Chapter 210). In Chapter 270 the Angel says Megumi’s memories of Hana have come back, and Megumi promises to be her “right arm.”
Does Hana Kurusu die?
Not in the main series. She loses her right arm (Chapter 214) and is knocked out in Shinjuku (Chapter 264) but recovers. The spin-off Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo (Chapter 13) reveals that she has died by its era.
