Quick answer
- Kuma agreed to become the basis of Vegapunk’s clone soldiers in exchange for treating Bonney’s otherwise fatal illness.
- Saturn imposed three additional conditions: become a Warlord, become a Marine weapon and eventually surrender all independent thought and personality.
- Kuma’s acceptance saved Bonney, but the Government dictated the destructive terms. His last requests show that his loyalty was never simply to the Government.

Kuma became a cyborg to save his daughter Bonney. Vegapunk could treat her illness, but the bargain for that treatment became a Government demand for Kuma’s body, service and eventual loss of personality. Saturn imposed the final conditions; Vegapunk carried out the conversion.
Spoilers: Kuma and Bonney’s Egghead backstory, through the events adapted in anime Episode 1137. Episode numbers below are overall anime numbers, not manga chapter numbers. This guide explains the treatment bargain and its consequences, rather than predicting Kuma’s ultimate fate.
Why did Kuma agree to become a cyborg?
Bonney had the same devastating disease that killed her mother Ginny. Kuma raised her after Ginny’s death, then learned that Bonney was not expected to survive to her tenth birthday. That diagnosis made finding treatment the central problem of his life.
The official Episode 1132 synopsis establishes the connection between Ginny’s illness, Kuma becoming Bonney’s father and the doctor’s prognosis. This is the essential background to the agreement: Kuma was seeking a way for his child to live.
His later acceptance should not be read as enthusiasm for becoming a weapon. The benefit he wanted was Bonney’s recovery. The cost he accepted was what others demanded in return. Keeping those two parts separate makes the decision much clearer than saying that he simply wanted to be a cyborg.
What did Vegapunk originally offer?
While traveling in search of a cure, Kuma met the Revolutionary Army again. Dragon directed him toward Vegapunk, who said he could treat Bonney. During the examination, Vegapunk recognized that Kuma was a Buccaneer.
Instead of charging the enormous surgery fee, Vegapunk asked to use Kuma as the model for clone soldiers. Kuma agreed because Bonney could be saved. The official Episode 1133 synopsis sets out that exchange.
What were Saturn’s three conditions?
| Condition | What it required of Kuma |
|---|---|
| Join the Seven Warlords of the Sea | Accept a Government-linked position as a pirate |
| Become a Marine human weapon | Undergo the conversion demanded by the Government |
| Abandon thought and personality | Ultimately lose independent thinking and selfhood |
The official Episode 1134 synopsis lists these three demands. Vegapunk reacts with anger to the order to erase Kuma’s selfhood. Kuma nevertheless accepts because of Bonney.
Was Kuma forced, or did he choose it?
Both agency and coercion matter here. Kuma knowingly agrees, but the Government controls the terms and holds his daughter’s treatment over the decision. His acceptance does not make Saturn’s demands a free or harmless choice.
The most accurate short answer is: Kuma accepted the imposed conditions to save Bonney. That preserves his deliberate sacrifice without removing the responsibility of the people who set the price.
Why did the Government want Kuma’s body?
Vegapunk’s interest in using Kuma as a clone model is connected to the discovery of his Buccaneer heritage during the examination. That is the reason the original proposal is about this particular patient accompanying Bonney, rather than a generic fee that anyone could pay.
The distinction between the original Kuma and weapons modeled on him matters. His body becomes the basis for a military project, while the original man is subjected to a continuing conversion. A shared appearance does not make every related weapon the same individual with the same memories or motives.
The official Volume 108 overview places this development within Kuma’s larger past: childhood enslavement, gaining the Paw-Paw Fruit and his wish to save people whose freedom has been taken away. The military use of his body therefore has a painful contrast with the life he wanted to lead.
Why could Bonney not simply return to her father?
Treatment does not give the family an uncomplicated reunion. Kuma continues acting under the Warlord arrangement while Bonney is kept under Government supervision. The official account identifies her attendant Alpha as a Cipher Pol agent.
Kuma sends letters to Bonney, but Alpha destroys them instead of delivering them. By the time Bonney is well, Alpha still lies to keep her confined. Conney recognizes the deception and helps Bonney leave to search for her father.
The official Episode 1135 synopsis explains the intercepted letters, Bonney’s recovery and her escape. Their separation is therefore not evidence that Kuma stopped caring once he became a Warlord. The messages intended to maintain that relationship were actively prevented from reaching her.
When did treatment and erasure happen?
| Checkpoint in the official anime summaries | What has happened |
|---|---|
| Episode 1134: treatment and conversion begin | Bonney receives surgery while Kuma undergoes cyborg procedures. Six months later they return to Sorbet, where Alpha begins supervising Bonney. |
| Episode 1135: one year of conversion remains | Kuma still sends letters, knowing his remaining independent life has a deadline. |
| Episode 1135: six months after Bonney’s ninth birthday | Bonney is fully recovered. Alpha continues confining her until Conney helps her escape. |
| Episode 1136: the day of personality erasure | Kuma asks for the Sunny-protection program and leaves a tenth-birthday message for Bonney. |
These are the intervals attached to specific events in the official summaries. The table does not turn the two separate six-month references into one interchangeable treatment duration.
Why did Kuma protect the Thousand Sunny?
Before the erasure of his personality, Kuma asked Vegapunk to program him to protect the Straw Hats’ ship. The official Episode 1136 synopsis records that request and his belief that Luffy could become a hero who changed the sea.
This provides a different kind of evidence from a spontaneous act after conversion. The ship’s protection is a task he deliberately requests while he still has his own will. It preserves one of his choices as an instruction for the body that will remain.
The same official episode revisits his encounters with the Straw Hats at Thriller Bark and Sabaody. Those encounters belong to the history behind his trust in Luffy. They should not be reduced to a claim that every action he takes is sincere obedience to the World Government.
For the wider organization around Dragon, see our One Piece factions guide. Kuma’s political affiliations provide context, but Bonney’s treatment remains the immediate reason for this bargain.
What did Bonney learn from Kuma’s memories?
After experiencing his memories, Bonney understands that Saturn ordered the loss of Kuma’s personality. The official account also connects Saturn’s experiments to the tragedy surrounding Ginny and Bonney’s power.
The Episode 1137 synopsis explicitly describes Bonney correcting her misunderstanding of Vegapunk. It also describes Kuma arriving to protect her despite the supposed loss of his selfhood.
That appearance is an important event, but it does not automatically prove complete restoration of his memories or personality. An action and a full medical or mechanical explanation are different claims. The safe reading is to report what he does and leave the exact extent of his remaining selfhood open where the cited account does not settle it.
The agreement in one sequence
Bonney’s illness creates the need. Vegapunk offers treatment in exchange for using Kuma as a clone model. Saturn adds Warlord service, weaponization and erasure of independent thought. Kuma accepts for Bonney, then uses the choices still available to him to leave protection and messages behind.
That sequence explains why his sacrifice is so severe without treating the Government’s demands as his own desires. He wants his daughter to have a future; the bargain makes him surrender the ability to share that future as the person she knows.
