Quick answer

  • Cursed tools (呪具, jugu) are weapons with a curse built in, so even someone with no cursed energy can fight curses with them (Ch. 4). That is why Toji and Maki are the series’ best users.
  • Only two tools are called special grade on the page: Playful Cloud (Ch. 47, 110) and the Inverted Spear of Heaven (Ch. 71). The Black Rope is only “special-grade equivalent” in the Official Fanbook, and the Split Soul Katana and Dragon-Bone are never graded.
  • Cursed tools are not cursed objects: Sukuna’s fingers, the Death Painting wombs and Prison Realm are cursed objects, which have different functions: Sukuna’s fingers are associated with incarnation, while Prison Realm seals its target. Jujutsu High’s cursed warehouse (忌庫) stored both kinds (Ch. 146).
  • By the end, the Inverted Spear of Heaven is lost or destroyed, the Chain and Black Rope are gone, Playful Cloud is last seen in Toji’s hands in Shibuya (Ch. 113), and only Maki’s Split Soul Katana replica is still in use (Ch. 252–253).

A cursed tool (呪具, jugu) in Jujutsu Kaisen is a weapon with a curse built into it. Because the cursed energy lives in the weapon, even someone with no cursed energy can use one to fight cursed spirits (Ch. 4, Episode 3). That is why the two Heavenly Restriction fighters, Toji Fushiguro and Maki Zenin, are the series’ best cursed tool users.

This list covers every cursed tool that gets a name in the manga: what it does, who used it, whether its grade is actually stated, and where it ended up. Episode numbers use overall numbering (S1 = 1–24, S2 = 25–47, S3 = 48–59); Jujutsu Kaisen 0 chapters are written “Ch. 0-N”. Spoilers run to the end of the manga (Chapter 271).

Every named cursed tool in Jujutsu Kaisen

Only a handful of cursed tools ever get a name on the page. Most weapons in the series (Nanami’s blunt sword, Megumi’s shadow swords, Mei Mei’s axe, Nobara’s hammer and nails) are cursed tools too, but they are never named or graded.

Cursed tool Japanese What it does Main users Grade stated in the manga?
Playful Cloud 游雲 (Yū-un) Three-section staff with no cursed technique. Pure physical power; hits as hard as the user is strong Toji, Suguru Geto, Maki, Megumi, Aoi Todo Yes, special grade (Ch. 47, Episode 19; Ch. 110, Episode 39)
Inverted Spear of Heaven 天逆鉾 (Ama no Sakahoko) Jitte-shaped dagger. Forcibly cancels any cursed technique it touches, including Gojo’s Infinity Toji Yes, special grade (Ch. 71, Episode 27)
Chain of a Thousand Miles 万里ノ鎖 (Banri no Kusari) Chain that keeps extending as long as one end stays out of sight Toji Not captioned in a chapter; the Official Fanbook (p. 171) lists it as special grade
Split Soul Katana 釈魂刀 (Shakkontō; also romanized Shakukontō) Broad katana that ignores hardness and cuts the soul directly. Full power needs eyes that can see the soul of inanimate things (Ch. 198) Toji (original), Maki (Mai’s replica), Hagane Daido No grade stated. Said to be worth 500 million yen (Vol. 9 bonus page)
Black Rope 黒縄 (Kokujō) Rope that disturbs and cancels cursed technique effects. Burns away a little with every use Miguel No. Only “comparable to special grade” (Official Fanbook p. 171)
Dragon-Bone 竜骨 (Ryūkotsu) Sword that stores impact and cursed energy and fires it out of three vents on the back of the blade Maki (made by Juzo Kumiya) No
Slaughter Demon 屠坐魔 (Tozama) Wide-bladed combat knife. No special effect shown Maki, Yuji Itadori No
Kamutoke (VIZ: Supreme Martial Solution) 神武解 Vajra-like short weapon that calls lightning down on the target Sukuna (Heian era; Yorozu’s replica in the present) No
Hiten 飛天 Long trident Sukuna used in the Heian era. Ability never shown Sukuna No
Festering Life Sword 爛生刀 (Ranshōtō) Cleaver that fires eggs into wounds; insect curses hatch from the injury Kurourushi (cursed spirit) No
Sword of Extermination 退魔の剣 (Taima no Tsurugi) Blade coated in positive energy, deadly to cursed spirits Mahoraga (shikigami) No. “Comparable to special grade” (Official Fanbook p. 171)

Cursed tools are ranked on the same grade 4 to special grade scale as sorcerers and curses, and the higher the grade, the bigger the edge in a jujutsu fight (Ch. 47, Episode 19). Special grade tools can be worth upwards of 500 million yen (Ch. 47).

Which cursed tools are actually special grade?

Searchers often see “special grade cursed tool” attached to almost every weapon on this list. The manga itself is much stingier.

  • Stated on the page: Playful Cloud and Inverted Spear of Heaven. Playful Cloud is introduced with a “special grade cursed tool” caption when Maki uses it against Hanami (Ch. 47, Episode 19), and the Inverted Spear of Heaven gets the same caption when Toji stabs Gojo (Ch. 71, Episode 27).
  • Supplementary material only: Chain of a Thousand Miles. The chapters never caption it. The Official Fanbook lists it as special grade. We flag that as a supplementary-source claim.
  • “Special grade equivalent,” never graded: Black Rope and the Sword of Extermination. The Fanbook (p. 171) says their cursed-technique effects are on par with special grade tools, but no grade is assigned. Calling the Black Rope “a special grade cursed tool” is a common shortcut, not something the manga says.
  • No grade at all: everything else. Split Soul Katana, Dragon-Bone, Slaughter Demon, Kamutoke, Hiten and the Festering Life Sword are never graded.

One more wrinkle: Playful Cloud is explicitly called the only special grade cursed tool without a cursed technique (Ch. 110, Episode 39). Every other special grade tool has a technique imbued in it. Playful Cloud is just power, which is exactly why Toji and Maki get more out of it than any sorcerer with ordinary strength.

Cursed tools vs cursed objects: what’s the difference?

Cursed tool vs cursed objectCursed tool・A weapon made with a curse inside・Works even with zero cursed energy (Ch. 4)・Playful Cloud, Inverted Spear, Black Rope・Can break; cannot incarnateCursed object・Remains of an ancient sorcerer or curse・Some enable incarnation; Prison Realm seals・Sukuna’s fingers, Death Paintings, Prison Realm・Special grade ones can’t be destroyed (Ch. 55)

Cursed tools (呪具, jugu) and cursed objects (呪物, jubutsu) are different things, and Sukuna’s fingers belong to the second group.

Cursed tool (呪具) Cursed object (呪物)
What it is A weapon or support item deliberately made with a curse inside An item with a dark history that holds cursed energy; usually the remains of an ancient sorcerer
Examples Playful Cloud, Inverted Spear of Heaven, Split Soul Katana, Black Rope Sukuna’s 20 fingers, the Cursed Womb: Death Paintings, Prison Realm
Can it incarnate? No Some can. Sukuna’s fingers and the Death Paintings are incarnation examples; Prison Realm is a sealing object, so incarnation is not a property to assign to every cursed object.
Can it be destroyed? Yes. Slaughter Demon, Megumi’s black sword and Playful Cloud all break Special grade cursed objects can’t be destroyed; the binding vow that made them guarantees it (Ch. 55, Episode 22)
Graded? Grade 4 to special grade Same scale, by the curse inside. Sukuna’s fingers are special grade cursed objects (Ch. 1)

Incarnation distinguishes the examples involving vessels, rather than every object in the category. Yuji eating a finger, the Death Painting brothers getting bodies, every Culling Game player who came back from the Heian era: all of that is cursed-object behavior. No cursed tool ever does it.

A common claim online is that Jujutsu High’s cursed warehouse (忌庫, kiko) holds only cursed objects and that cursed tools are stored somewhere else. The manga does not support that split. Gojo took Yuta to the cursed warehouse to pick out a katana (Ch. 0-2), Playful Cloud was kept there after it was recovered from Geto, and the Zenin and Kamo clans emptied the warehouse of cursed tools after the Shibuya Incident (Ch. 146, Episode 50). The same warehouse is where Mahito stole Sukuna’s fingers and the Death Painting wombs during the Goodwill Event. It stores both.

The official Shibuya timeline makes the contrast observable: fingers fed to Yuji allow Sukuna to take over, while Gojo is sealed in Prison Realm. The official Choso profile separately identifies him as the incarnated first Death Painting. A label such as “cursed object” should not erase these different uses.

Toji Fushiguro’s cursed tools and his inventory curse

Toji is the only character shown carrying a whole arsenal of named cursed tools, and his delivery system is as important as the weapons.

  • The inventory curse (格納型呪霊). Toji kept a cursed spirit that stores objects inside its body. He pulled weapons out of its mouth, and the curse could shrink itself and be swallowed, so a man with zero cursed energy stayed undetectable even while carrying cursed tools (Ch. 73, Episode 28). It also held the swarm of Fly Heads he released as a smoke screen against Gojo (Ch. 71, Episode 27).
  • Why Geto couldn’t take it. Toji and the curse had a master-servant relationship, so Cursed Spirit Manipulation couldn’t absorb it while Toji was alive (Ch. 73; Vol. 9 author note). After Toji died, Geto obtained the inventory curse, and with it Playful Cloud, which is why he is swinging a three-section staff at Yuta in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (Ch. 0-4).
  • His combos. Toji cut his way out of Geto’s giant worm curse and sliced the Rainbow Dragon with the Split Soul Katana (Ch. 71; Ch. 73). Against Gojo he stabbed through Infinity with the Inverted Spear of Heaven (Ch. 71–72), then in the rematch clipped the spear to the Chain of a Thousand Miles for range (Ch. 75, Episode 28). Hollow Purple snapped the chain and ended the fight.

In Shibuya, the resurrected Toji grabbed Playful Cloud out of Maki’s hands (Ch. 110, Episode 39), sharpened its ends by grinding them together, and destroyed Dagon with it. The links broke during the kill, leaving him a single sharpened rod (Ch. 111).

Black Rope vs Inverted Spear of Heaven: the two technique-cancelers

Both tools shut down cursed techniques, which is why Tengen names them as the only two cursed tools that could open the back of Prison Realm and free Gojo (Ch. 145, Episode 50). They work differently.

  • Inverted Spear of Heaven: forced cancellation on contact with the blade. Any active technique it touches switches off, Limitless included (Ch. 71). No consumption; it can be used as long as it exists.
  • Black Rope: disturbs and cancels technique effects, and it is a consumable. The rope burns away with every use; Miguel had lost more than half of it within minutes of fighting Gojo and complained that his people spent decades weaving it (Ch. 0-4).

By the Culling Game both are gone. Tengen believed Gojo either sealed the Inverted Spear of Heaven overseas or destroyed it twelve years earlier, and even Tengen doesn’t know which. Yuta went to Miguel’s village in Africa looking for more Black Rope and found none left (Ch. 145). That dead end is what made Hana Kurusu’s technique-erasing Angel the only remaining way to open Prison Realm.

What happened to each cursed tool by the end of the manga

Cursed tool Fate
Playful Cloud Recovered from Geto by Jujutsu High (Ch. 0-4), loaned to Maki (Vol. 13 author note), used against Hanami (Ch. 46–47, Episode 19) and Dagon (Ch. 109, Episode 38). Toji snatched it, broke its chains killing Dagon (Ch. 110–111), then stabbed himself in the head with the remaining rod to spare Megumi (Ch. 113, Episode 40). It never appears again
Inverted Spear of Heaven Last used in Toji’s rematch with Gojo (Ch. 75, Episode 28). Sealed overseas or destroyed by Gojo; status unknown even to Tengen (Ch. 145)
Chain of a Thousand Miles Snapped by Hollow Purple in the same fight (Ch. 75)
Split Soul Katana (original) Toji’s blade. Whereabouts after his death are never shown
Split Soul Katana (Mai’s replica) Mai constructed it with her life (Ch. 149, Episode 51). Maki used it to kill her father Ogi and wipe out the Zenin clan (Ch. 149–150), to clear the Sakurajima colony (Ch. 190), to finish Naoya’s cursed spirit once she could see souls (Ch. 198), and to wound Sukuna with a cut his Reverse Cursed Technique struggled to heal (Ch. 252). Sukuna caught the blade before hitting her with Black Flash (Ch. 253). It survives the series
Black Rope Fully burned away against Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (Ch. 0-4). No more found in Africa (Ch. 145)
Dragon-Bone Retrieved from Juzo Kumiya’s workshop after Tengen gave Maki the location (Ch. 146). Broke Ogi’s katana (Ch. 148, Episode 51) and was dual-wielded against the Kukuru Unit (Ch. 150). Not shown after the Zenin massacre
Slaughter Demon Lent to Yuji on his first mission (Ch. 4, Episode 3); cut in half by the Finger Bearer along with Yuji’s hand (Ch. 6, Episode 4). Yuji never told Maki (Ch. 33, Episode 14)
Kamutoke Yorozu’s replica reached Sukuna via Uraume (Ch. 237). Used on Kashimo (Ch. 237–238) and Mei Mei’s crows (Ch. 244). Confiscated by Higuruma’s Deadly Sentencing in place of Sukuna’s technique (Ch. 245) and never returned (Ch. 248)
Hiten Heian-era only (Ch. 238 flashback). Modern status unknown
Festering Life Sword Stays with Kurourushi’s offspring after the player is exorcised (Ch. 179, Episode 59)
Sword of Extermination Part of Mahoraga; it goes wherever Mahoraga is summoned (Ch. 118, Episode 41)

The sequel series Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo later shows Maki’s Split Soul Katana stored inside Rika and a new batch of Black Rope in Africa, but that is outside the main manga.

Unnamed cursed tools worth knowing

Not every cursed tool gets a name. These appear often enough to matter:

  • Maki’s glasses are cursed tools that let her see curses (Ch. 0-3; Ch. 18, Episode 8).
  • Yuta’s katana was picked out of the cursed warehouse by Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (Ch. 0-2).
  • Nanami’s blunt sword passed to Takuma Ino, and Kusakabe used it against Sukuna in Shinjuku (Ch. 253).
  • Kasumi Miwa’s katana is a near-cursed tool: an ordinary sword that became close to one from years of cursed energy use (Vol. 5 author note). A brand-new weapon reinforced with cursed energy does not count.
  • Juzo Kumiya is the only cursed tool maker shown at work; his pieces include Haruta Shigemo’s hand-sword (Ch. 99, Episode 36) and Dragon-Bone.

Why cursed tools matter to Toji and Maki

Jujutsu Kaisen is a story about inherited talent: techniques are inborn, domains are rare, and the strongest people are born strong. Cursed tools are the one weapon class that ignores all of that. Pick one up and it works.

That is why the series hands its best cursed tools to its two people with no cursed energy. With a cursed tool, Toji’s and Maki’s superhuman bodies become the entire output. Playful Cloud, the special grade with no technique to lean on, is the purest version of that idea: in their hands there is no ceiling but the user.

FAQ

What is a cursed tool in Jujutsu Kaisen?

A weapon or support item deliberately imbued with a curse. Because the cursed energy is in the weapon, even a person with no cursed energy can use it to fight cursed spirits (Chapter 4). Cursed tools are graded from grade 4 up to special grade.

Is the Black Rope a special grade cursed tool?

Not officially. The manga never assigns it a grade. The Official Fanbook says its effect is comparable to a special grade cursed tool, which is where the “special-grade equivalent” wording comes from. It cancels cursed technique effects but burns away with every use (Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Chapter 4).

Which cursed tools are confirmed special grade?

Playful Cloud (Chapters 47 and 110) and the Inverted Spear of Heaven (Chapter 71) are captioned special grade in the manga. The Chain of a Thousand Miles is listed as special grade only in the Official Fanbook.

Are Sukuna’s fingers cursed tools?

No. They are special grade cursed objects (呪物), not cursed tools (呪具). Some cursed objects enable incarnation: Sukuna’s fingers and the Death Paintings are examples. Prison Realm instead seals a target. The category alone does not mean every object incarnates. Cursed tools are weapons and can break.

What happened to the Inverted Spear of Heaven?

It was last used in Toji’s rematch with Gojo (Chapter 75). In Chapter 145 Tengen says Gojo either sealed it overseas or destroyed it twelve years earlier, and no one knows which. It never reappears.
