Chainsaw Man’s devils fall into five groups. At the top sit the Four Horsemen (Control, War, Famine and Death) and the Primal Fears (Darkness, Falling, Aging and, by most counts, Death). Below them are ordinary devils, Fiends (devils in human corpses) and Hybrids (humans fused with a devil).
This list covers every major devil in each group, with debut chapters and how each one ends up. Spoilers run to the final chapter (Ch. 232, March 2026). The manga is complete at 24 volumes.
How Chainsaw Man devils work
A devil is born in Hell from humanity’s fear of a concept. The more people fear its name, the stronger it gets. That is why a Gun Devil is a world-ending threat while a Tomato Devil is a 400,000-yen bounty (Ch. 1).
Three rules decide how the list below plays out:
- Reincarnation. A devil that dies on Earth comes back in Hell, and one that dies in Hell comes back on Earth. It loses its memories each time.
- Primal Fears never die. They are so feared that they have never gone through that cycle (Ch. 64).
- Chainsaw Man is the exception. A devil he eats is erased, and its concept leaves the world with it. (Our separate guide covers every devil he erased.)
| Group | What it is | Main examples |
|---|---|---|
| Four Horsemen | Four “sister” devils named after the Apocalypse riders | Makima / Nayuta, Yoru, Fami, Death |
| Primal Fears | Ancient, never-killed devils of instinctive fears | Darkness, Falling, Aging, Death |
| Ordinary devils | Every other devil, from Fox to Gun | Zombie, Bat, Eternity, Fox, Future, Gun |
| Fiends | A devil possessing a human corpse | Power, Beam, Violence Fiend, Cosmo |
| Hybrids | A living human fused with a devil, can transform | Denji, Reze, Katana Man, Quanxi |
The Four Horsemen in Chainsaw Man
The Four Horsemen are Control, War, Famine and Death, named after the riders in the Book of Revelation. Makima first mentions them in Ch. 84, and in Ch. 87 she says they and the Weapon Devils fought Chainsaw Man in Hell. All four look human and call each other sisters. Death is the eldest and strongest.
| Horseman | Human form | Debut | Ability | Fate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Control Devil | Makima, then Nayuta | Ch. 1 (Makima), Ch. 97 (Nayuta) | Controls anyone she sees as beneath her | Makima is killed and eaten by Denji (Ch. 96). Nayuta is killed in Part 2 (Ch. 170), then returns as head of Public Safety in the new world (Ch. 232) |
| War Devil | Yoru, inside Asa Mitaka | Ch. 98 | Turns anything she sees as hers into a weapon | Makes a truce with Denji (Ch. 230). Asa is free of her in the new world, and Yoru’s whereabouts are unknown (Ch. 232) |
| Death Devil | Posed as “Fami” | Ch. 108 | Enslaves anything she has killed | Eaten and erased by Chainsaw Man (Ch. 219) |
| Famine Devil | The real Fami | Ch. 195 | Drains the life of whatever she touches | Survives the war; her fate in the new world isn’t shown |
Is Fami the Famine Devil?
Not at first. The Fami who joins Asa’s Devil Hunter Club in Ch. 108 calls herself the Famine Devil. She was really the Death Devil, using her sister’s name as cover. The real Famine Devil shows up as a transfer student in Ch. 195, and the truth comes out a few chapters later (Ch. 198). Older guides written before then still list Fami as Famine.
Death’s plan is also unusual for a final villain. Nostradamus’ prophecy says the “Great King of Terror” will end humanity, and Death believes that is her (Ch. 146). So she spent Part 2 trying to make War and Chainsaw Man strong enough to kill her.
Primal Fears: Darkness, Falling, Aging and Death
Primal Fears are devils of fears so old and instinctive that they have never been killed. Characters call them “transcendent” beings, and even other devils are terrified of them (Ch. 64). The Falling Devil says humanity has no weapon that can kill one (Ch. 125).
| Primal Fear | Debut | What it does | Fate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Darkness Devil | Ch. 64 | Cuts off everyone’s arms in an instant; its blade makes victims bleed out | Stays in Hell, alive. Makima only wounds it (Ch. 66) |
| Falling Devil | Ch. 122 | A “chef” from Hell who makes people fall upward into Hell through doors in the sky | Beaten by Yoru (Ch. 209), who turns her into clothes (Ch. 210) |
| Aging Devil | Ch. 173 | Withers and ages whatever it touches; traps people in a world where nobody ages or dies | Gives up and sends everyone back (Ch. 190); still alive |
| Death Devil | Ch. 108 | The “Ultimate Terror”; enslaves those she kills | Erased by Chainsaw Man (Ch. 219) |
How many Primal Fears are there?
Three are named outright, and Death makes four. Darkness, Falling and Aging are all called Primal Fears in the story. Death is also a Horseman, but as the “Ultimate Terror” she sits at or above Primal Fear level. The Chainsaw Man wiki counts four: Darkness, Falling, Aging and Death. Any other figure you see online, such as eight, isn’t backed by the manga.
Even Primal Fears can be beaten. Death took control of the Falling Devil (Ch. 131), and the Aging Devil offered to let Chainsaw Man eat it if Public Safety killed 10,000 children (Ch. 174).
Major ordinary devils
These are the regular devils that drive the plot. For who made contracts with them and what it cost, see our devil contracts guide. This table covers the devils themselves.
| Devil | Debut | Key detail | Fate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zombie Devil | Ch. 1 | Turns the yakuza into zombies and kills Denji | Killed by Denji. In the new world it attacks Denji again and Power cuts it down (Ch. 232) |
| Bat Devil | Ch. 6 | Holds Power’s cat Meowy hostage | Cut to pieces by Denji in the Bat Devil arc |
| Eternity Devil | Ch. 14 | Traps a hotel floor in an endless loop | Begs Denji to kill it after three days of fighting, and he does (Ch. 19). Reborn in Part 2 and impaled by Yoru (Ch. 117) |
| Fox Devil | Ch. 10 | Lends its head to good-looking devil hunters | Alive |
| Curse Devil | Ch. 24 | Aki’s Curse Spike: pierce a target three times and a giant skeleton appears | Alive |
| Ghost Devil | Ch. 25 | Invisible arms; Himeno gives it her whole body | Deceased (wiki) |
| Future Devil | Ch. 31 | Grants future sight, and predicts Aki’s “worst possible death” | Alive; mocks Aki’s death in Ch. 79 |
| Angel Devil | Ch. 34 | Drains lifespan by touch and turns it into weapons | Loses both arms in Hell, then ends up under Makima’s control |
| Gun Devil | Ch. 75 | Killed 1.2 million people worldwide | Defeated; its flesh pieces are held by various countries |
| Justice Devil | Ch. 124 | Summoned by the Falling Devil to eat her “dishes” | Killed by the Falling Devil (Ch. 131) |
| Locust Devil | Ch. 226 | Grows huge once Death’s erasure means pests can’t die | Erased in the original timeline |
The Gun Devil gets top billing in Part 1 for a reason. On its first rampage it hit Japan for 26 seconds and killed 57,912 people (Ch. 13).
Fiends in Chainsaw Man
A Fiend is a devil that has taken over a human corpse. Fiends are weaker than full devils and, unlike Hybrids, they die from fatal wounds. They also can’t make contracts.
| Fiend | Devil | Debut | Fate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power | Blood | Ch. 4 | Killed by Makima (Ch. 81). Alive again in the new world, where she saves Denji (Ch. 232) |
| Beam | Shark | Ch. 34 | Dies against the Darkness Devil (confirmed in Ch. 71) |
| Galgali (Violence Fiend) | Violence | Ch. 34 | Dies against the Darkness Devil (Ch. 65) |
| Cosmo | Cosmos | Ch. 54 | Turns Santa Claus’s mind to “Halloween” (Ch. 70); beheaded by Makima’s team the same chapter |
| Yoru (in Asa) | War | Ch. 98 | A special case: she kept Asa’s brain intact, so they share one body |
Quanxi’s other three girlfriends, Long, Pingtsi and Tsugihagi, are also Fiends, but the manga never says which devils they are.
Hybrids (weapon devils fused with humans)
Hybrids are living humans fused with a devil. They change form with a trigger, like pulling a cord or a pin, and can come back from almost anything if they get blood. Makima says the seven Weapon Devils once served the Four Horsemen (Ch. 87).
| Hybrid | Devil | Debut | Fate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Denji | Chainsaw (Pochita) | Ch. 1 | Pochita erases himself (Ch. 231). Denji starts over in the new world (Ch. 232) |
| Katana Man | Katana | Ch. 23 | Beaten by Denji and Aki (Ch. 38); returns in Part 2 and is taken prisoner (Ch. 191) |
| Reze | Bomb | Ch. 40 | Caught by Makima’s side at the end of her arc (Ch. 52), then revived as one of Makima’s Hybrids (Ch. 86) |
| Quanxi | Bow | Ch. 54 | Beheaded by Makima (Ch. 70), revived as her pawn (Ch. 87), back in Part 2 (Ch. 160) |
| Barem Bridge | Flamethrower | Ch. 86 | Eaten by Chainsaw Man (Ch. 214) |
The other weapon Hybrids are Longsword (Miri Sugo), Whip and Spear. They appear mostly as Makima’s Special Division 5.
What happens to the devils at the end?
In Ch. 231, Denji and Pochita have been eaten by a devil. Pochita tears out his own heart and eats himself, erasing Chainsaw Man and resetting the world.
The final chapter (Ch. 232) shows the new world:
- Nayuta runs Public Safety in Makima’s place.
- Power is alive. She saves Denji from the Zombie Devil, just as Pochita did in Ch. 1.
- Asa is an ordinary student with no Yoru in her head.
- Devils Chainsaw Man had erased are presumably restored (Ch. 232).
So the series ends where it began, with Denji, the Zombie Devil and a devil saving his life. This time it’s Power instead of Pochita.
