Quick answer
- There is no official Detective Conan death count; the most detailed fan tally counts 385 deaths in the manga through Volume 106, 281 of them in the present-day story.
- The author and the voice cast say only about half a year has passed in-story, and the characters say it is under a year.
- 281 deaths over six months works out to about 560 deaths a year (about 430 homicides), or roughly one death every 16 hours.
- Real life: Japan recorded 283 murder deaths in 2024 and Tokyo 31, so Conan’s world runs at about twice Japan’s toll and about 18 times Tokyo’s.

Detective Conan (released in English as Case Closed) has a famously absurd body count. The most detailed fan tally we could find counts 385 deaths in the manga through Volume 106, of which 281 happen during the story’s present-day timeline. Since only about half a year has passed in-story, that works out to roughly 560 deaths a year around Conan, about twice the number of people actually killed by murder in all of Japan in 2024 (283).
Below are the numbers, where they come from, and the exact assumptions behind the calculation, so you can check or reuse them. This article contains no plot spoilers beyond case titles and statistics.
Detective Conan death count: the short answer
| Figure | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Deaths in the manga, incl. past killings (Vol. 1–106) | 385 | Fan tally by “Nitehen” (Ameblo), updated May 4, 2026 |
| Deaths in the present-day story only | 281 | Same tally |
| Of those 281, suicides | 17 | Same tally |
| Of those 281, killed by a clear murder method | about 216 | Our sum of the tally’s categories (see below) |
| In-story time elapsed | about 6 months (under 1 year) | Author and cast statements (see below) |
| Deaths per year in Conan’s world | about 560 (6-month basis) | 281 ÷ 0.5 years |
| Real murder deaths in Japan, 2024 | 283 | National Police Agency |
| Real murder deaths in Tokyo, 2024 | 31 | Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department |
All counts are for the manga only. The anime adds original (non-manga) cases and the movies add more, so their totals are higher and are not included here.
How many people have died in Detective Conan?
There is no official death count. Shogakukan and Gosho Aoyama have never published one, so every figure online is a fan count. They differ because each counter makes different choices.
The most transparent tally we found is a long-running Japanese blog post by “Nitehen,” which ranks every victim by cause of death and names each one with the case title. It was last updated on May 4, 2026, and covers the manga through Volume 106 (Chapters 1124–1133 are the last ones included).
Its rules:
- Included: past killings that matter to a case, serial-murder victims killed before Conan arrives, police and Black Organization deaths, and unnamed people who die on the day of a case.
- Excluded: mass killings from the distant past, missing persons, people with no name or portrait, and unrelated traffic deaths, suicides and illnesses.
That gives 385 deaths. The blogger also publishes a second list with past killings removed, meaning only people who die during the story’s present day. That list totals 281.
Here is how those 281 present-day deaths break down, using the blog’s categories:
| Cause of death | Deaths |
|---|---|
| Blunt force | 45 |
| Strangulation | 44 |
| Stabbing | 35 |
| Shooting | 32 |
| Poisoning | 30 |
| Slashing (sword/blade) | 19 |
| Suicide | 17 |
| Fall | 17 |
| Drowning | 10 |
| Burning | 6 |
| Other causes (traffic, illness, gas, electrocution, starvation, a bombing, etc.) | 21 |
| Cause never stated | 6 |
The first six rows, plus burning and a handful of one-off murder methods (a bombing, crushing, manual strangulation and two murders disguised as illness), add up to about 216 clear homicides. Falls and drownings include some murders too, so 216 is a floor, not a ceiling. (The blog’s categories add up to 282, one more than its stated total of 281, so treat every figure here as ±1.)
How much time has passed in Detective Conan?
This is the other half of the calculation, and it is shakier than the death count.
The series runs on a floating timeline. The manga started in Weekly Shōnen Sunday in January 1994, but Conan is still in first grade. Holidays and technology follow real publication dates, yet the characters say that less than a year has passed since Shinichi was shrunk.
What the people behind the series have said:
| Who | Statement (paraphrased) | Where | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wakana Yamazaki (voice of Ran) | Only about half a year has passed since Shinichi disappeared | Mynavi News interview, Dec. 22, 2013 | Verified in the original article |
| Gosho Aoyama (author) | 30 years have passed since serialization began, but only about half a year in Conan’s world | Kono Mystery ga Sugoi! 2024 (Takarajimasha, Dec. 2023) | Secondary: quoted by a fan write-up; we could not see the book |
| Minami Takayama (voice of Conan) | Only a little over half a year has passed in the story | Asahi Shimbun, Jan. 3, 2026 | Secondary: quoted by a fan write-up |
| Rikiya Koyama (voice of Kogoro) | Only half a year, with hundreds of cases | Detective Conan Newspaper, Mar. 2014 | Secondary: quoted by a fan write-up |
A widely shared line attributed to Aoyama (“only about half a year has passed in Conan’s world; too many incidents, right?”) circulates on Japanese forum-summary sites without a traceable original, so we don’t rely on that exact wording.
The consistent message is about six months, and certainly under a year. We use six months as the main case and 12 months as a conservative upper bound.
How many murders per year in Detective Conan? The calculation
Assumptions, stated plainly:
- Deaths: 281 present-day deaths, manga Volumes 1–106 (Nitehen tally, May 2026). Homicides: about 216.
- Time: 6 months of in-story time (author and cast statements). Upper bound: 12 months.
- Scope: Deaths in cases Conan (or Shinichi) is involved in, as counted by the tally. Not all of Beika or Tokyo.
- Straight-line rate: Deaths are spread evenly over the period.
| 6 months in-story | 12 months in-story | |
|---|---|---|
| All deaths per year | 281 ÷ 0.5 = 562 | 281 ÷ 1 = 281 |
| All deaths per day | 562 ÷ 365 = about 1.5 | about 0.8 |
| Homicides per year | 216 ÷ 0.5 = 432 | 216 |
| Homicides per day | about 1.2 | about 0.6 |
So on the author’s own timeline, someone dies near Conan roughly every 16 hours, and someone is murdered roughly every 20 hours.
Even the most generous assumption (a full year) still leaves one death roughly every 31 hours.
Detective Conan vs real homicide statistics in Tokyo and Japan
Conan lives in Beika, a fictional district of Tokyo, so Tokyo is the fairest comparison.
| Murder cases reported | People killed | |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo, 2024 (Tokyo MPD) | 96 | 31 |
| All of Japan, 2024 (National Police Agency) | 970 | 283 |
| All of Japan, 2025 (National Police Agency) | 976 | not yet in the detailed tables |
| Conan’s cases, per year (6-month basis) | n/a | about 560 (about 430 homicides) |
Notes on the real figures:
- Japan’s “murder” (殺人) category includes attempted murder. Of the 970 cases in 2024, only 286 were completed killings and 684 were attempts. That is why the number of people killed (283) is much lower than the number of cases.
- The Tokyo figures come from Table 30 of the MPD’s 2024 statistics, which lists 96 recognized murder cases and 31 people killed.
Putting it together on the 6-month assumption:
- Conan’s circle sees about 2 times as many deaths per year as the whole of Japan records as murder victims (562 vs 283), or about 1.5 times counting homicides only (432 vs 283).
- Against Tokyo alone, it is about 18 times the murder deaths (562 vs 31), or about 14 times counting homicides only.
On the 12-month assumption, Conan’s homicides (216) would still equal about three quarters of all murder deaths in Japan and about 7 times Tokyo’s.
Why the death counts online don’t match
You will see several other numbers repeated in English and Japanese articles. Here is where they come from, as far as we could trace them.
| Figure | Scope | Origin | How much to trust it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 385 / 281 deaths | Manga, Vol. 1–106 | Nitehen tally, updated May 2026 | Best available: every victim is named |
| 148 deaths, 204 cases, ~400 in-story days | Manga, Vol. 1–70 | DCW forum user “Anti-APTX4869,” May 2011 | Old; the author says it was a quick skim |
| 70 bodies in one in-story month | Manga, between the Valentine’s Day case in Vol. 33 and the White Day case in Vol. 69 | note.com analysis (“about 2.4 bodies a day”) | Fan estimate that assumes cases run in publication order |
| 453 deaths (Vol. 74) / 334 (Episode 631) | Manga and anime | Widely copied across Japanese blogs | Could not trace an original source |
| 541 deaths | Manga, through 2021 | A Chinese blogger, via aggregator sites | Could not verify the method |
The main reasons they differ:
- Past deaths. Counting victims from flashbacks and old cases adds about 100 to the manga total.
- Suicides and accidents. Some counts only include murders; others include every death.
- Manga vs anime. The anime adds many original cases. Anime episode numbers here are overall numbers.
- Date. A count from 2011 covers barely two-thirds of today’s manga.
How long is Detective Conan now? (October 2026)
| Count | As of | |
|---|---|---|
| Manga volumes | 108 | Vol. 108 released April 8, 2026 (Vol. 109 due October 16, 2026) |
| Manga chapters (files) | 1,154 collected | Vol. 108 contains Chapters 1144–1154 |
| Anime episodes | 1,216 aired | Episode 1216 aired October 10, 2026 |
| Serialization start | January 1994 | Weekly Shōnen Sunday |
The fan death tally stops at Volume 106 (Chapter 1133), so two volumes’ worth of newer cases are not yet counted. The true present-day total is higher than 281.
The bottom line
Take the most careful fan count (281 present-day deaths) and the creators’ own timeline (about six months), and Detective Conan’s world produces around 560 deaths a year. That is roughly double every murder death in Japan and 18 times Tokyo’s. Stretch the timeline to a full year and the numbers halve, but Conan’s cases still produce about seven times Tokyo’s real murder toll, counting homicides alone.
Every one of these numbers is an estimate built on stated assumptions. If you quote them, quote the assumptions too: manga only, through Volume 106, 281 deaths, six months of in-story time.
FAQ
How many people have died in Detective Conan?
There is no official count. The most detailed fan tally (updated May 2026) counts 385 deaths in the manga through Volume 106, including past killings, and 281 deaths in the present-day story.
How much time has passed in Detective Conan?
About six months. Gosho Aoyama and several voice actors have said only about half a year has passed in-story, even though the manga has run since 1994, and the characters say it has been less than a year.
How many murders happen per year in Detective Conan?
On a six-month timeline, the 281 present-day deaths equal about 560 deaths a year, including about 430 homicides. Even on a full-year timeline it is about 216 homicides a year.
How does Detective Conan compare with real murder rates in Tokyo?
Tokyo recorded 96 murder cases and 31 murder deaths in 2024, and all of Japan 283 murder deaths. Conan’s cases produce about 18 times Tokyo’s toll and about twice Japan’s on the six-month assumption.
Does the death count include the anime and movies?
No. The figures here are manga only. The anime adds original cases and the movies add more, so their totals are higher.
