Quick answer
- Yoru is the War Devil, one of the Four Horsemen. She took over Asa Mitaka’s corpse in Chapter 98 but kept half of Asa’s brain, so both minds share one body.
- Her power turns anything she considers hers into a weapon, and the more guilt its owner feels about it, the stronger the weapon (Ch. 99–100).
- Chainsaw Man once ate part of her body and the Nuclear Weapons Devil, leaving her weak (Ch. 104). Her first goal was to make him vomit nuclear weapons back up (Ch. 98).
- In the ending, Yoru and Denji are swarmed by devils (Ch. 230) and Pochita erases himself to reset the world (Ch. 231). The new world shows Asa living normally; Yoru does not appear, so her fate is left unknown (Ch. 232).
Yoru is the War Devil in Chainsaw Man, one of the Four Horsemen and the main antagonist of Part 2. She takes over the body of a high school girl, Asa Mitaka, and the two share it for the rest of the manga. Her power turns anything she owns into a weapon, and the weapon gets stronger the more guilt is attached to it.
This guide covers her powers, how she ended up inside Asa, her grudge against Chainsaw Man, and what the final chapters actually show. Spoilers through the final chapter (Chapter 232, March 2026). Chapter numbers refer to the manga.
Who is Yoru, the War Devil?
Yoru is the Devil that embodies the concept of war. She is one of the Four Horsemen, with Control (Makima), Famine and Death as her sisters. Makima first mentions the other Horsemen in Chapter 84, and Yoru debuts in Chapter 98, the first chapter of Part 2.
“Yoru” (night) is a name the War Devil offers early in Part 2, after Asa complains that “War Devil” is too awkward to use. It pairs with “Asa” (morning).
You can tell who is in control of the body by the face. When Yoru is in charge, Asa’s face shows scars where the class president slashed her, and her eyes have the ringed pattern shared by the Horsemen.
How did Yoru get into Asa’s body? (Chapter 98)
Asa is an isolated student who accidentally crushes Bucky, the class’s pet Chicken Devil, and is shunned for it. The class president, who has a contract with the Justice Devil, set that up and then attacks Asa at night, clawing her face open (Ch. 98).
As Asa dies, an owl-like devil perched on a streetlight tells her that if she wants to live, her body will belong to it. Her corpse gets up as the War Devil, turns her teacher’s spine into a sword and the president’s arm into a grenade, and kills them both (Ch. 98).
The next day Yoru explains the arrangement (Ch. 99):
- She took over only half of Asa’s brain, so Asa’s mind survives.
- The one not in control appears to the other as a hallucination. Yoru can read Asa’s thoughts; Asa can’t read hers.
- Yoru needs Asa to blend into human society and find Chainsaw Man.
- She threatens to kill Asa if she won’t cooperate, and promises to give the body back if she does.
One limit matters later: Yoru can’t take control while Asa is terrified (Ch. 101), and loses control if Asa panics mid-fight (Ch. 123).
War Devil powers: the weapon rules
The core power is weapon creation. The rules are laid out early and then loosened as Yoru grows stronger.
| Rule | What it means | First shown |
|---|---|---|
| It must be “hers” | Anything or anyone that belongs to her can become a weapon: objects, humans, devils, fiends, even her own body parts | Ch. 99 |
| Ownership is subjective | There is no objective test. Asa “buys” a whole aquarium with ¥1 million and it counts | Ch. 116 |
| Touch + name (early) | At first she has to touch the target and call out the weapon’s name | Ch. 98–99 |
| Guilt = power | The more guilt the owner feels about turning it into a weapon, the stronger it is. Yoru tells Asa that killing a friend she feels guilty about would make a great weapon | Ch. 100 |
| People need a bond | A living person has to “belong” to her: a limb she took, someone she killed, or someone in a relationship with her. That is why she asks Yoshida, then Denji, out | Ch. 99, 112 |
| Limits loosen with power | Once the fear of war rises, she can make weapons without touching them or saying the name (the Room 606 Sword, a telekinetically summoned soap bar) | Ch. 148, 176 |
The guilt rule is why Asa, not Yoru, makes the strongest weapons. Yoru admits only Asa can create strong weapons (Ch. 122). In Chapter 229, Yoru says that by bearing guilt she can forge stronger weapons, but that she tried to understand Asa’s guilt and couldn’t.
Yoru also has standard devil traits: strength, speed, regeneration from blood, and power that scales with how much humans fear war.
Every major weapon Yoru and Asa create
| Weapon | Made from | Chapter |
|---|---|---|
| Tanaka Spinal Cord Sword | Asa’s teacher’s head and spine | 98 |
| Flesh Hand Grenade | The class president’s arm | 98 |
| Super-Strong Uniform Sword | Asa’s school uniform, a gift from her late mother | 107 |
| Aquarium Spear | An aquarium Asa “bought” for ¥1 million; kills the Eternity Devil | 116–117 |
| Nail Knife | Asa’s own fingernail, torn off | 123 |
| Super Chainsaw Man Motorcycle | A motorbike Denji stole on Asa’s orders | 130–131 |
| Room 606 Sword | Asa’s apartment, made without touching it | 148 |
| Right Gun / Left Tank Gauntlets | The Gun Devil and Tank Devil, whom Yoru calls her children | 176 |
| “Gun Goddess” | The Statue of Liberty, via the Gun Devil’s contract with ~40,000 US gun owners’ index fingers | 177–178 |
| Falling Devil clothes | The Falling Devil, a Primal Fear | 210 |
| Chainsaw Whip | The Accident Devil | 216 |
| Michigan Sword | The state of Michigan, which collapses | 220 |
| Oregon Sword | The state of Oregon | 221 |
| Moon Spear | The American flag on the Moon, homing on Denji | 224 |
| Chainsaw Motorcycle | A discarded motorbike | 225 |
The Gun Goddess works because turning a devil into a weapon also lets Yoru trigger that devil’s contracts. That mechanic is covered in our Chainsaw Man devil contracts guide. (The English edition says 400,000 members; the Japanese text says 40,000.)
Why is the War Devil so weak at first?
In Chapter 104, Yoru explains that she fought Chainsaw Man alongside the other Horsemen in Hell, and he ate part of her body. Chainsaw Man also ate the Nuclear Weapons Devil and the World War II Devil, erasing those concepts from the world. With no big wars since, war became something people only see in movies and games, and Yoru feared she would be forgotten and cease to exist (Ch. 104). You can see what else Pochita erased in our list of devils Chainsaw Man ate.
Being a fiend in a human body weakened her further, which is why she runs from the Falling Devil in Chapter 122.
Her power comes back in stages:
- Fear of war rises. The Falling Devil’s global chaos makes nations poorer, and Yoru expects war to follow. By Chapter 148 she is dramatically stronger.
- Nuclear weapons return. In Chapter 210, Yoru realizes she remembers nuclear weapons even though Pochita ate that devil. The reason: America reinvented them from scratch during its conflict with the Soviet Union. Her power skyrockets, and she turns the Falling Devil into clothes.
What is Yoru’s goal?
Her goal changes as she gets stronger.
- Part 2 start: find Chainsaw Man and make him vomit nuclear weapons back up (Ch. 98).
- Deeper motive: rescue the comrades he swallowed and prove she is the more fearsome devil (Ch. 176).
- At full power: the Death Devil warns that Yoru plans to erase Death itself and start a never-ending World War II, where people who cannot die fight forever (Ch. 211).
She beats Pochita with a nuclear punch in Chapter 221–222, but Denji takes his body back and fights on.
War Devil true form
Yoru’s true devil form is never shown. We only see her in two borrowed bodies:
- Nightjar fiend: after Pochita ate most of her, she came to Earth in a near-death state and stole the body of a nightjar, taking on its memories and guilt (revealed in Ch. 229). This owl-like bird is the creature that appears to the dying Asa in Chapter 98.
- Human fiend: Asa’s body, with scars and ringed eyes.
Asa and Yoru’s ending (Chapters 228–232)
The final arc turns the Asa–Yoru relationship around.
- The dove (Ch. 228). Yoru is about to run Denji down with a Chainsaw Motorcycle when he coughs up a dove. Remembering Asa’s grief over Bucky, she swerves and crashes. Because her California contract doesn’t cover self-inflicted wounds, she can’t heal. She tells Asa she did it because Asa hates seeing birds killed.
- “Sins are nothing to a Devil” (Ch. 229). Yoru explains that she stole the nightjar’s body to survive and felt its guilt for eating worms. She says the things Asa thinks are sins are nothing in a Devil’s eyes. Denji then gives her his blood.
- Truce (Ch. 230). Yoru says she hates Chainsaw Man but not Denji, and agrees to be his friend. Moments later they are swarmed by insect and pest devils. With Death gone, fertile species no longer die off, and humanity is overrun.
- The reset (Ch. 231). In Denji’s mind, Pochita tells him they were eaten by a devil. Pochita then devours himself, erasing Chainsaw Man and creating a world where he never existed.
- The new world (Ch. 232). Bucky is alive. Asa trips while holding him, and Denji catches her. She thanks him as “Chainsaw Man” because of how he fought with a chainsaw, then runs back to play with her classmates.
Is Yoru dead?
Unknown. In the old world, Yoru is presumably devoured by the horde with Denji (Ch. 230–231), but her death is never shown. In the reset world, Yoru does not appear and is not mentioned. The fan wiki lists her status as “Unknown”.
What the ending does show is that Asa is no longer bound to Yoru. She is an ordinary student with Bucky alive and friends around her, the life she wanted before Chapter 98.
One detail fans point to: Chapter 231 opens with a nightjar flying in a peaceful sky. Reading it as Yoru freed from war is a fan interpretation, not something the manga states.
Is Yoru in the anime?
Not yet. The 2022 TV anime and Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc (2025) adapt Part 1. The announced follow-up, the Assassins Arc, is also Part 1 material. Yoru and Asa’s Part 2 story has not been animated.
FAQ
What are the War Devil’s powers in Chainsaw Man?
Yoru can turn anything she considers hers into a weapon, including objects, people and devils. The more guilt its owner feels about it, the stronger the weapon (Chapters 99–100). She also has standard devil strength and regeneration, and her power grows with humanity’s fear of war.
How did Yoru take over Asa’s body?
After the class president killed Asa, the War Devil offered to save her in exchange for her body and revived her corpse (Chapter 98). She took only half of Asa’s brain, so Asa’s mind survived alongside hers (Chapter 99).
Does Yoru die in Chainsaw Man?
Her fate is not shown. She is presumably devoured by a horde of devils with Denji (Chapter 230), and after Pochita resets the world (Chapter 231), she does not appear in the final chapter. Her status is unknown.
What happens to Asa at the end of Chainsaw Man?
In the reset world of Chapter 232, Asa is an ordinary student, Bucky is alive, and she is no longer bound to Yoru. Denji catches her when she trips, and she thanks him as “Chainsaw Man”.
Is Yoru one of the Four Horsemen?
Yes. Yoru is War, alongside Control (Makima), Famine and Death. Chainsaw Man ate part of her body in the past, which is why she starts Part 2 so weak (Chapter 104).
